Match summary
A patchwork VfB side enjoyed the perfect start to the match and went 2-0 up after just 11 minutes. Jeff Chabot scored the opener from close range after being teed up by Atakan Karazor following a corner.
Demirovic at the double
Just three minutes later, Ermedin Demirovic added VfB’s second to finish a swift counter. Sebastian Hoeneß’s charges were firmly in control of the game, solid at the back and the better team in every area. Fabian Rieder almost added to the scoreline on the half-hour mark with a long-distance drive that struck the right-hand post, leaving VfB 2-0 ahead at the break.
Stuttgart did grab a third early in the second half though. Bochum’s defence once again left too much space, allowing Ramon Hendriks to cross from the left into the middle, where Demirovic slid in to score his second and effectively put the game to bed. Demirovic almost scored another in the 58th minute following good work from Nick Woltemade but was denied by VfL goalkeeper Timo Horn.
Hat-trick hero
Bochum never seriously threatened the VfB goal in the second half, with Hoeneß’s charges too tactically organised and solid for them to find a way through. Demirovic put the icing on the cake late on to complete his hat-trick and round off a deserved win.
Goals
8th minute: From Chris Führich’s corner the ball comes to Karazor, who lays the ball off for Chabot to fire the ball into the right-hand corner from close range.
11th minute: Karazor lifts the ball over the Bochum defence for Demirovic to chase. He races forward, dinks it over Horn and into the net.
48th minute: Hendriks delivers a teasing ball from the left into the centre for the unmarked Demirovic, who is left with a simple finish from inside the six-yard box.
86th minute: Leonidas Stergiou plays the ball across the face of goal to Demirovic, who is once again unmarked. The striker taps into the empty net from close range to complete the scoring.
