Match summary:
Dortmund had more possession in an evenly balanced first half but never seriously threatened to breach VfB’s resolute backline. Indeed, the best chance fell to Deniz Undav in the 37th minute when he was sent one-on-one with Gregor Kobel, only for the VfB forward to be thwarted by a last-ditch Emre Can tackle.
Team spirit the key
Sebastian Hoeneß’s side eventually took the lead early in the second half following a swift attack that ended in Waldemar Anton turning the ball into his own net (50’). It was 2-0 a short while later when Jeff Chabot volleyed in a Jamie Leweling cross. Julian Brandt pulled one back for Dortmund in the closing stages (81’) but VfB stuck together and battled well to see the result over the line and collect three hard-earned points.
Goals:
50th minute: Chris Führich plays a one-two with Leweling on the right and then bursts into the box before fizzing a cross into the middle. Anton slides in to try and clear but instead puts the ball into his own net.
61st minute: Dortmund struggle to properly clear a corner and the ball eventually lands at the feet of Leweling on the edge of the penalty box. He delivers an inch-perfect cross for Chabot to volley in for 2-0.
81st minute: The home side take a short corner. Brandt scurries into the left-hand side of the box and hits a powerful strike into the far corner.
Special mention:
Chabot’s goal was both his first for VfB and his first in the Bundesliga.
Maximilian Mittelstädt made his 50th Bundesliga appearance for VfB.
