Match summary:
VfB set the tone just seconds into the match when Enzo Millot played a beautiful pass through for Nick Woltemade, whose shot was saved for a corner by former Stuttgart goalkeeper Florian Müller. The hosts took the lead from the subsequent delivery, with Anthony Rouault finishing from Angelo Stiller’s cross (2‘).
Hoeneß’s charges hit their stride after that, playing some eye-catching football and doubling their advantage in the 17th minute through Ermedin Demirovic. Woltemade added another from the penalty spot in stoppage time to make it 3-0 at the interval.
Up to fourth
VfB were unable to create as many openings in the second half but remained solid at the back and never seriously looked like conceding. Deniz Undav came off the bench to score the team’s fourth following good work by Chris Führich (80’), putting the seal on a win that lifts VfB up to fourth in the Bundesliga standings.
Goals:
2nd minute: Rouault wins an aerial battle to meet Stiller’s corner and head the ball into the net from close range.
17th minute: Stiller crosses into the middle and finds the unmarked Demirovic on the edge of the six-yard box to head home.
45th+5 minute: Freiburg’s Max Rosenfelder brings Jamie Leweling down inside the box and VfB are awarded a penalty. Woltemade leaves Müller no chance from the spot.
80th minute: After a neat one-two in midfield, Führich tears away down the left and finds Undav unmarked near the edge of the area. He finishes to add gloss to the scoreline.
Special mention:
Rouault’s goal was his first for VfB, coming in his 49th competitive outing. The defender has been on the club’s books since summer 2023.
