VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “It was the tough game we expected it to be and at the end we were happy when it was over. Credit to the players for accepting the nature of the game. We’re happy about the win, although we’re well aware it wasn’t our best home performance.”
Deniz Undav: “The three points are the most important thing. We struggled to get into the game but managed to score the goals so that we could win. It’s a lot of fun playing in this team right now. Anthony played a brilliant pass for my goal and after that I got lucky that the goalkeeper speculated [where I would shoot].”
Maximilian Mittelstädt: “We knew all about Mainz’s strengths. They started the match well and posed us a few problems. We ran out of steam a bit towards the end, but we coped well and did what we needed to with the ball. All in all, we deserved to win.”
Deniz Undav: „Die Hauptsache sind die drei Punkte. Wir sind schwer reingekommen, machen dann aber die Tore, sodass wir am Ende gewinnen. Derzeit macht es großen Spaß, mit dieser Mannschaft zu spielen. Anthony spielt bei meinem Tor einen überragenden Pass. Danach hatte ich ein wenig Glück, dass der Torhüter spekuliert.“
Maximilian Mittelstädt: „Wir wussten um die Stärken der Mainzer. Sie sind gut in die Partie gekommen und haben uns vor die eine oder andere Aufgabe gestellt. Nach der Unterbrechung hatten wir eine Phase, in der er es besser wurde. Es war insgesamt ein schwieriges Spiel. In der Anfangsphase und gegen Ende mussten wir schwierige Phasen überstehen. Gegen Ende ist uns ein wenig die Luft ausgegangen. Das haben wir aber gut überstanden und haben unsere Sache mit Ballbesitz gut gemacht. Alles in allem war es ein verdienter Sieg. Ich bin froh, dass ich der Mannschaft helfen konnte. Insgesamt zählt der Erfolg der Mannschaft. Wir konzentrieren uns darauf, auch die nächsten Spiel erfolgreich zu gestalten.“
