Important home win

VfB excelled at the right time in both halves to deservedly dispatch TSG Hoffenheim 3-1.

Match summary:

VfB displayed a committed performance from the start in the derby against Hoffenheim, but were lucky that Ihlas Bebou was only able to hit the underside of the crossbar after 18 minutes. Just 60 seconds later though, Stuttgart took the lead: After a corner taken by Omar Marmoush, Marc Oliver Kempf rose highest to plant a header into the bottom corner to give Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side the lead at the break.

VfB didn't let off after the interval. On the hour mark, Konstantinos Mavropanos set off on a dribble, cut inside from the right to double the lead. Roberto Massimo added another in the closing stages to make it 3-0 (81') before Hoffenheim's Jacob Bruun Larsen scored a late consolation. It stayed 3-1 to VfB, with Stuttgart matching their defensive stability over the entire 90 minutes with attacking proficiency. The win extends VfB unbeaten home record against TSG Hoffenheim to five games.

The goals:

18th minute: After a corner from the right-hand side by Marmoush, Kempf rises above two opponents and heads in for the lead.

60th minute: Mavropanos wins the ball in midfield, charges forward in unstoppable fashion and curls a shot in from 16 yards to make it 2-0.

81st minute: After being played in by Tanguy Coulibaly, Massimo arrows a shot across goal from the right-hand edge of the box and scores his first Bundesliga goal.

84th minute: Bruun Larsen's cross evades everyone and nestles in the bottom corner of the VfB goal.

Post-match reaction:

VfB sporting director Sven Mislintat: "We rewarded ourselves for a top team mentality. Dinos' goal was amazing. He makes a good run, goes for goal with all his might and hits it so sweetly. I liked that a lot. For our third goal too it was important that the young players like Tanguy and Roberto get rewarded for what they do."

Marc Oliver Kempf: "We implemented our strengths today. Everyone fought for everyone else and we tried to play football right from the off. After every mistake we supported each other straight away to rectify the mistake. Of course it's nice that I could help the team with my goal. I haven't scored three goals in one Bundesliga season before either."

Roberto Massimo: "We said during the week that we had to remember our strengths and bring them to the table in the game. We managed to do that today. We really wanted to win this match. I’m very happy that I scored my first Bundesliga goal. It's a dream come true.”
