VfB failed to truly get a grip on RB Leipzig over the 90 minutes and were forced onto the defensive from the off. At the break, Pellegrino Matarazzo's team were down 1-0 and then conceded the second goal just 16 seconds into the second half. Leipzig continued to dominate proceedings; VfB were unable to land a blow on their opponents in the second 45 either, and in the end they deservedly lost their first away match of the new season 4-0.
Goals:
39’: VfB don't clear the high ball well. Dominik Szoboszlai gets to the ball at the right edge of the penalty area and scores with an unstoppable shot into the bottom-left corner to give Leipzig the lead.
46’: After the restart, the home side combine to bypass VfB, who switched off. André Silva backheels the ball to Emil Forsberg and the Swede scores from close range just 16 seconds in to make it 2-0.
52’: Szoboszlai increases the lead to 3-0 when a free kick from the left flies past everyone in the penalty area and straight into the bottom corner, much to the surprise of VfB keeper Florian Müller.
65’: Referee Florian Badstübner awards a penalty after a handball by Marc Oliver Kempf. Silva converts to make it 4-0 to Leipzig.
Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We were shown our limits today. RB Leipzig were the better team in all areas. It's a shame that we conceded the first goal at a period in the game where we had stabilised things, and then conceded a quick second right after the break. We conceded two more goals later on that could have been avoided, but the bottom line is that Leipzig were simply a class above us today.”
Borna Sosa: “We are disappointed and have to accept that RB Leipzig were the better team over the 90 minutes. We didn't get into the game well and overall lost the ball too cheaply. In addition, you have to be clinical with the few chances you get against Leipzig. But that's football. We have to accept this defeat and move on.”
