Last-minute equaliser earns deserved draw

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side took a point from an entertaining 3-3 draw away to TSG Hoffenheim in a match in which VfB showed great character, equalising in second-half stoppage time.

Team news:

The VfB head coach made three changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt in the team’s last Bundesliga outing prior to the international break. Waldemar Anton, Tanguy Coulibaly and Daniel Didavi all started, with Atakan Karazor, Borna Sosa and Mateo Klimowicz dropping to the bench.

Highlights
16th minute Christoph Baumgartner takes aim from the edge of the penalty area and opens the scoring with a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner.
18th minute Nicolas Gonzalez drives into the Hoffenheim box at pace, jinking his way past several defenders before curling in a brilliant equaliser into the far corner.
27th minute Gonzalez meets a cross on the edge of the six-yard box, but his header strikes the crossbar. The rebound falls to Silas Wamangituka, who hits the base of the right-hand post with his effort. This also bounces back to his feet and leaves him to tap in from close range and put VfB in front.
48th minute Ryan Sessegnon charges forward into space on the left and has a free shot at goal from around eight yards out, bringing Hoffenheim level again.
71st minute Andrej Kramaric converts a penalty low into the bottom left corner to put the hosts 3-2 up.
90+3rd minute Sasa Kalajdzic flicks on a header in the Hoffenheim penalty area to Marc Oliver Kempf. The VfB defender shoots on the turn from 10 yards out and his low drive squeezes in at the far post to make it 3-3.

Marc Oliver Kempf:

“It’s good that we at least managed to take a point from the game. You saw again today that we’ve got fighting spirit and that we all keep going until the very end to get something from the match.”

Summary:

VfB deservedly took a point on Saturday from what was an open game with plenty of chances at both ends. Matarazzo’s charges showed tremendous resilience to fight back and received their reward in stoppage time with Kempf’s strike.
