VfB brought back a point from their trip to Gelsenkirchen on Friday evening. FC Schalke 04 took the lead in the first half, but substitute Nicolas Gonzalez levelled the score from the spot after the break.
Team news
Borna Sosa and Mateo Klimowicz returned to the starting line-up, with Silas Wamangituka and Daniel Didavi dropping to the bench.
30th minute | The hosts take the lead on the half-hour. Amine Harit fires over a free-kick from the right side of midfield and finds Malick Thiaw in the box, who heads home at the far post to make it 1-0 to Schalke. |
45th minute | VfB go into the break with it all to do. Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men had the better of the chances in a balanced first half but a well-worked set piece was enough to give Schalke the lead. |
56th minute | A cross from Sosa is met by a header on target from Gonzalez. The ball hits the hand of Schalke defender Salif Sane and the referee awards a penalty after consulting the video referee. Gonzalez steps up and makes it 1-1. |
90th minute | Referee Benjamin Brand brings the match to an end and the two teams have to be content with a 1-1 draw which sees VfB maintain their unbeaten run. |
Gonzalo Castro:
You can see the team’s mentality though – we’ve got a young group that never gives up. We knew that we’d carve out chances, and after the break we made the most of one of them to equalise. Based on our second-half performance, I think we deserved more than just a point out of the game.
Summary
VfB keep on racking up the points. After battling back to level the scores, the lads from Cannstatt were the more active team, while remaining solid in defence and allowing relatively few chances throughout the 90 minutes. This second consecutive 1-1 draw moves VfB up to nine points.
