Comfortable home win

Team news

Pellegrino Matarazzo named an unchanged line-up from the side that beat Köln last week. Hamadi Al Ghaddioui, who was sidelined for a long time due to a pelvic injury, was back in the VfB squad for the first time since Matchday 5.

Highlights
10th minute Wataru Endo gives VfB the lead with his first Bundesliga goal. Borna Sosa swings in a corner from the right and the Japanese midfielder is unmarked at the back post to fire in the opener.
26th minute The Cannstatt boys make it 2-0. Another corner and another goal from Endo!
34th minute Sosa again sends the ball into the danger area from a corner and again it ends up in the back of the net. This time it’s Sasa Kalajdzic who heads home to make it 3-0.
40th minute The visitors pull a goal back just before the interval. Benjamin Stambouli finds Sead Kolasinac, who drills low into the corner, leaving VfB with a 3-1 lead at half-time.
72nd minute Schalke have a huge chance to reduce the deficit further, but Gregor Kobel saves Nabil Bentaleb’s penalty.
88th minute Substitute Philipp Klement turns on the edge of the box to put VfB 4-1 up.
90th minute +2 VfB add gloss to the scoreline late on as Daniel Didavi adds a fifth with a long-range strike.

Sasa Kalajdzic:

We started the game very well and controlled it as much as possible. We were really good in possession, but also in our counter-pressing. We want to build on this win in the coming games, keep developing and working hard.

Summary

VfB dominated in the first half, made the most of their chances and quickly raced into a 3-0 lead. Matarazzo’s charges did not play with quite the same purpose at the start of the second half, and Schalke subsequently created some goalscoring opportunities. However, Kobel was in inspired form and thwarted the visitors to ensure there was no nerve-wracking twist to the game. Klement’s first Bundesliga goal shortly before full time put the seal on the win, with Didavi adding the icing on the cake.
