Post-match quotes

The coaches' reactions following VfB’s 3-2 defeat to Mainz.

Markus Weinzierl: "We were well in the game in the first 10 minutes, but we dropped off a bit after conceding from a deflected shot and didn't put in a good first-half display. We had spare men, but defended the second goal poorly. At the break we said we wanted to take something from the game in the second half, which would have been possible if we hadn't conceded the third goal. We should have defended that set piece better. We came back into it but couldn't score the third goal, which was there for us and what the team would have deserved. Anastasios Donis could only hit the post and there was a contentious situation in the Mainz area. Today panned out as it did because we gave too much away at the back – their goals were too easy – and scored our goals too late at the other end."

Sandro Schwarz: "There were 10 eventful minutes at the end of the game. In the first half we were in charge from the fifth minute, moved the ball well, were dangerous in front of goal and went ahead. Then from the 10th minute we defended solidly and took a fully deserved lead into the break. We were under more pressure in the second half and struggled to create transitions without them having chances. It looked like VfB were on top at that point. From the 75th minute we tried to manage the game, allowed them to cross a lot and weren't as solid. If you look at the 94 minutes as a whole, though, we deserved to win."
