Dramatic home win

It certainly wasn’t a game for the faint-hearted – but in the end only one statistic counted: VfB beat Werder Bremen 2-1 to claim their first victory of the season. Until that was guaranteed though, the team had to deal with a number of setbacks.

Personnel:

Tayfun Korkut made three changes to the side that began in Leipzig in mid-week: Andreas Beck was back in the right full-back position in place of Pablo Maffeo. In the attack, Daniel Didavi, who missed out on the last three games with an Achilles tendon problem, and Anastasios Donis were in from the outset, with Erik Thommy and Chadrac Akolo taking places on the bench.

Highlights
7th minute Anastasios Donis unleashes the first shot on goal for VfB. Having taking control against several Werder players in the opposition box, the attacker fired from the right edge of the area, but curled the ball narrowly wide of the top left corner.
9th minute A delivery into the box finds Bremen‘s Yuya Osako a step quicker than the VfB defence. Merely getting a toe to the ball, the effort is turned goal-wards, but Ron-Robert Zieler quickly gets an arm up to make a good reaction save.
19th minute A perfectly executed counter-attack sees VfB take the lead! Tayfun Korkut’s men won possession in their own half of the pitch, with Daniel Didavi then playing an exceptional pass from the half-way line, splitting the Bremen defence, into the path of Anastasios Donis. The 22-year-old has only the advancing Werder keeper Jiri Pavlenka to beat and slots home to make it 1-0.
36th minute VfB will play the remaining 54 minutes with a man extra! Taking on a pass, Daniel Didavi leaves his marker Milos Veljkovic standing with a quick turn and advances towards the box. 17 meters from goal, the chasing Milos Veljkovic pulls the VfB playmaker down. Already on a booking, a second yellow and subsequent red follow.
46th minute Just 32 second after the re-start, the visitors have a massive chance to level the scores. 25 meters from the VfB goal, Yuya Osako flicks a header on into the path of Max Kruse. The Bremen captain gets a shot away from 17 meters out, but Ron-Robert Zieler is equal to the effort.
52nd minute The first substitution of the game is a forced one: Dennis Aogo is unable to continue with a thigh injury and is replaced by Gonzalo Castro.
58th minute This time the post prevents Werder equalising! Taking on a pass from Yuya Osako, Maximilian Eggestein gets a shot away in the VfB penalty-area. Ron-Robert Zieler is beaten, but the foot of the post rescues the hosts.
61st minute Just minutes after the injury to Dennis Aogo, VfB are forced into making a second substitution. Anastasios Donis pulls up short on a sprint and limps from the field of play.
68th minute An own-goal sees VfB hand the visitors a 1-1: Borna Sosa takes a throw-in and attempts to find Ron-Robert Zieler. The VfB keeper is however distracted adjusting his sock and only sees the ball as it lands directly in front of home. His attempt to rescue the situation sees the ball bobble over the goal-line.
72nd minute Fortune favours VfB again: Claudio Pizarro fires from 17 meters out, only to see his effort bounce away off the post.
75th minute VfB again take the lead: A precise pass from Mario Gomez puts Gonzalo Castro through on the right side of the box and the substitute fires a well-placed and unstoppable shot into the far corner, to make it 2-1. Just seconds before, VfB had a chance to go in front, with a cross from Daniel Didavi agonisingly eluding Christian Gentner and Mario Gomez in the area.
90th minute The game is over and VfB celebrate a good performance and deserved 2-1 win over Werder Bremen

Tayfun Korkut :

For the fans it was a spectacle of a game, which really had everything.

Summed-up:

VfB claimed the points in a game which could hardly have provided more drama. And both Wasenelf goals on the day were the products of extremely high individual quality. Firstly, a dream-pass from Daniel Didavi paved the way for Anastasios Donis to make it 1-0, with Gonzalo Castro finishing coolly to make it 2-1, following a perfectly weighted pass from Mario Gomez. During the course of the match, VfB often had fortune on their side, with Bremen striking the frame of the goal more than once or being denied by the heroics of Ron-Robert Zieler. However, that doesn’t mean the win was undeserved! Over the ninety minutes, VfB battled committedly, particularly after the extremely curious intermittent equaliser, and earned themselves a second goal. The only major problem in the closing-phase: VfB failed to make use of a number of counter-attacks to make it 3-1 and secure the victory before the final whistle.
