Personnel

VfB head coach Tayfun Korkut made just one change to the eleven that began the game against SC Freiburg, with Chadrac Akolo getting the nod ahead of Dennis Aogo from the outset. Borna Sosa (back injury), Marc Oliver Kempf (thigh muscle-sinew tear) and Daniel Didavi (Achilles tendon) all missed out on the tie.

Highlight
14th minute VfB control the opening phases of the game against initially cautious observant guests from Düsseldorf. The first attempts on goal are registered by Gonzalo Castro, with a free-kick on the left (7th minute) and Mario Gomez, with a shot from distance (8'). The first effort landed in the arms of Fortuna keeper Michael Rensing, whilst Mario Gomez turned his shot over the bar. As the half progresses, Düsseldorf seek their fortunes on the attack. From a delivery by former VfB man Jean Zimmer for Benito Raman, Ron-Robert Zieler reacts quickly and clears the danger (12'). Shortly afterwards, Alfredo Morales fires a shot just wide of the target (14').
34th minute Both sides have shut up shop in the defence and are denying their respective opponents any way through. A shot from the edge of the box by Chadrac Akolo causes something of a problem, but Michael Rensing gets his fingertips to the ball and then clears ahead of the quickly advancing Mario Gomez and Nicolás Gonzalez.
45th minute The two sides head into the half-time break locked in stalemate at the end of an evenly-balanced 45 minutes of action. There were few sights of goal for either team during the first period.
48th minute To begin the second-half, VfB launch the first threatening attack, but the ball is poked off the toe of Mario Gomez before he can get a shot away.
51st minute A let-off for the hosts, as Fortuna win a series of three corners – two of which resulting in good saves from Ron-Robert Zieler rescuing the Wasenelf from a setback. The keeper first clears from Kaan Ayhan, before denying Marcel Sobottka from the third corner.
69th minute An Argentine production for VfB: Emiliano Insua crosses from the left and finds the head of Nicolás Gonzalez, whose attempt misses the mark.
82nd minute A deflected effort makes its way towards the VfB goal, but Ron-Robert Zieler is alert and juts a boot out to clear for a corner.
90th minute + 3 In the three minutes of added-time, again neither side can make a breakthrough and ultimately, VfB and Fortuna both have to settle for a share of the spoils.

Erik Thommy:

The result is not satisfying. At home, we naturally always want to hang onto all three points, but the way the game went tonight didn’t allow for that.

Summed-up

It was a game determined by both defensive blocks, with neither side really allowing their opponents to create anything of a genuine threat over the course of the ninety minutes – least of all from open play. On the whole, the share of the spoils was a justified outcome, although the visitors did have the better of the opportunities in the second-half.
