VfB Stuttgart returned from VfL Wolfsburg empty handed on Tuesday, the club's winless run at the Volkswagen Arena now stretching to 12 matches (D2 L10). Markus Weinzierl's side, who wore black armbands in memory of the father of captain Christian Gentner, slipped to a 2-0 defeat, with both goals coming in the first half.
Personnel
Weinzierl made two changes to his side following Saturday's 2-1 win at home to Hertha Berlin. There was a full debut for 17-year-old Antonis Aidonis, who replaced the injured Andreas Beck (knee) at right-back, while Anastasios Donis was recalled to the starting line-up in place of Gonzalo Castro.
7th minute | The first chance of the game falls to VfB but Mario Gomez cannot direct his header on target. |
24th minute | The Wolves take the lead. Maximilian Arnold delivers a free-kick from near the byline on the right and VfL captain Josuha Guilavogui is completely free to head the hosts in front. |
44th minute | After both teams fail to take advantage of opportunities on the counter, VfL double their lead on the stroke of half-time. Wout Weghorst capitalises on a lapse in the VfB defence to net his team's second goal. |
94th minute | The game peters out after that. Wolfsburg defend their lead with VfB failing to create any clear-cut chances. |
Markus Weinzierl:
We conceded goals we shouldn't have
Summary
VfB made a lively start and largely matched Wolfsburg during the first half. However, both goals were too easy for the Wolves and the two-goal deficit proved too much of a mountain to climb in the second period. The hosts shut up shop and VfB were unable to put sufficient pressure on the opposition goal.
