Head coach Markus Weinzierl's charges put in a battling, disciplined display in front of 52,739 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Arena to record their second home win of the season, with Donis – on his comeback from injury – finishing off VfB's best move of the game in the 39th minute.
Personnel
Timo Baumgartl was back in the starting line-up after recovering from a stomach infection, while Donis also returned to the side following a muscle tear, the duo replacing Emiliano Insua and Pablo Maffeo, who was sidelined due to an ankle complaint, respectively
1st minute | VfB are quick out of the blocks and immediately peg their visitors back around their own penalty area in the opening minutes. Eventually the ball falls to Dennis Aogo, whose long-range drive goes wide of the target. |
39th minute | The volume goes up a notch or two at the Mercedes-Benz as VfB link up well in midfield before Andreas Beck finds Donis on the edge of the Augsburg box with a low cross. The Greek forward fires first-time into the bottom corner to give VfB the lead. |
56th minute | Augsburg have the first chance of the second half as Martin Hinteregger heads Philipp Max's corner towards goal, but Ron-Robert Zieler is well placed to clear the danger with a reflex save. |
94th minute | After four long minutes of stoppage time the final whistle is blown. Relief mixed with joy for the VfB players, who celebrate a crucial 1-0 win. |
Summary
A solid team performance provides the foundation for three vital points for VfB. Captain Christian Gentner and Co. are strong in the tackles and make the most of one of the few clear chances in the game to move out of the relegation zone for the time being.
