Stuttgart left empty handed against Frankfurt

VfB Stuttgart continue to wait for a positive result after Markus Weinzierl's side lost 3-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt in front of 58,016 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday. The visitors scored twice in the first half and added a third in the closing stages.

Personnel

Dennis Aogo was back in the starting line-up against the Eagles, the 31-year-old returning after a muscle tear had kept him out since the win against Werder Bremen at the end of September. He was the only change to the side that lost to Hoffenheim last weekend.

Highlights
9th minute: The opening stages are end to end and VfB have a chance to take the lead, but Mario Gomez nods Pablo Maffeo's right-wing cross wide.
11th minute: Ron-Robert Zieler can only push Luka Jovic's low shot into the path of Sebastien Haller, who makes no mistake from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
32nd minute: Frankfurt's quick transitions are proving a threat time and again. On this occasion, Filip Kostic finds Haller, whose shot is saved by Zieler. Jovic collects the loose ball ahead of the VfB defence, however, and crosses into the box, where Ante Rebic nods into the far corner to double the visitors' lead.
45th minute: Weinzierl's side have the opportunity to cut the deficit just prior to the interval, but Gomez cannot convert after Nicolás González's through ball.
68th minute: Substitute Berkay Özcan looks to have reduced the arrears with a good finish from the edge of the box, but referee Sven Jablonski spots an offside and rules the goal out.
89th minute: Eintracht substitute Nicolai Müller heads in a third goal. Referee Jablonski whistles for full time soon afterwards.

Summary

Once again, VfB came into the game with high hopes – as was evident in the end-to-end opening stages. Defensive mix-ups, however, meant Stuttgart again went behind early, while Gomez and his team-mates were not clinical enough up front. The hosts created too few chances in the second period and so suffered another defeat.
