Opening day defeat in Mainz

In their first away game in the new Bundesliga season, VfB were left with nothing to show for their efforts as they slipped to a narrow 0-1 defeat at 1. FSV Mainz 05.

In the first 15 minutes of his 250th Bundesliga game for VfB, captain Christian Gentner had the opportunity to put the side in the shirts with the infamous hoops in front. Unfortunately the midfielder’s snapped shot from close range went just wide of the near post. And there was little fortune for the strike-duo of Nicolás Gonzalez and Mario Gomez on Sunday afternoon either – in spite of having some promising efforts. The hosts, on the other hand, capitalised on a brief period of pressure, for substitute Anthony Ujah to net the only goal of the game in the 76th minute.

Personnel

Compared to the side that began in last week’s DFB Cup outing at F.C. Hansa Rostock, VfB head coach made three changes from the outset. Captain Christian Gentner, Santiago Ascacibar and Benjamin Pavard were given the nod ahead of Daniel Didavi, Dennis Aogo and Timo Baumgartl from the outset. It was Benjamin Pavard’s first game in the shirt with the infamous hoop since winning the World Cup with France. The game in Mainz was Christian Gentner’s 250th Bundesliga appearance for VfB Stuttgart.

Highlights
3rd minute The early pressure in the game is created by the side in the shirts with the infamous hoop. From a blocked shot by Mario Gomez on the edge of the box, the Mainz defence clear a delivery from Emiliano Insua. Erik Thommy follows up to test Florian Müller from 20 meters out, but the Mainz keeper is equal to the effort.
9th minute The first real chance of the game falls to Bundesliga debutant Nicolás Gonzalez. A through-ball from Erik Thommy finds Mario Gomez, who sends his Argentine strike-partner on his way from the centre of the park. The 20-year-old displays the quality he possesses with a volleyed effort from the left corner of the box, but Florian Müller fists the attempt clear.
15th minute The onslaught on the home side’s goal increased further still. This time Nicolás Gonzalez is provider in the box for Christian Gentner. The VfB captain drives his direct volley from five meters out just wide of the near post.
50th minute VfB are again in control early in the second period. Nicolás Gonzalez wins possession from Pierre Kunde and sends a pass through from his strike-partner. Mario Gomez takes on the ball on the right side of the penalty area and fires in a right footed shot on the turn. From ten meters out, the front-man’s effort fails to hit the target.
59th minute From a relatively harmless attempt by Mainz, an immediate counter-attack ensues. A pass from Thommy picks out Mario Gomez, who flicks on the ball to Nicolás Gonzalez in the centre. Unfortunately, the Argentine loses the race to the ball with Florian Müller.
76th minute Both Robin Quaison and Gerrit Holtmann get into dangerous positions for FSV in front of Ron-Robert Zieler’s goal, before the home side then ultimately take the lead through substitute Anthony Ujah, who makes it 1-0 from ten meters out in a central position.

In the three added minutes, launch everything possible into attack, and press forward determinedly, but can find no gaps in the deep-standing Mainz defence.

If we had taken the lead in the first-half through Christian Gentner or Nicolás Gonzalez, then the match would have developed very differently. Although we haven’t started the season ideally, we are now looking ahead. Our complete focus is now on our first home game.

In the end, the side in the shirts with the infamous hoop put on a courageous display, but were left with nothing to show for a somewhat unfortunate performance in Mainz. Captain Christian Gentner, Mario Gomez & Co. were unable to make use of their superiority, particularly during the first-half, to take what would have been a deserved lead. It was to remain an open trading of blows into the closing phase, when then the hosts struck through a late substitute to claim all three points.
