VfB end the 2017/2018 season with four successive victories. On the back of wins over Bremen, Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop stole the three points away from FC Bayern Munich on Saturday afternoon. Away to the all-time German record title holders, in spite of being without three first-choice players, Gentner & Co., proved as stable and effective in front of goal as they had so often been in recent weeks. In the end, Tayfun Korkut’s men registered a 4-1 win. The success on the day now throws open the possibility of UEFA Europa League qualification for the Cannstatt Boys.
Personnel
VfB head coach Tayfun Korkut was forced to make three changes to his starting eleven. The fact that Santiago Ascacibar (red card suspension) and Dennis Aogo (fifth booking suspension) would be unavailable was clear following the home game against TSG Hoffenheim. In addition, Mario Gomez pulled out of the squad at short-notice, having become a father on Friday. The absent trio were replaced from the outset by Orel Mangala, Anastasios Donis and Chadrac Akolo. The gaps in the squad were duly filled on the substitute’s bench by Dzenis Burnic and Matthias Zimmermann. The latter was back on the Bundesliga team-sheet for the first time since tearing a cruciate ligament last August.
5th minute | What a start for VfB! With their first chance of the game, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop take the lead. Anastasios Donis takes possession in midfield, bursts forward at pace through the Bayern defence and lays a perfect pass square for Daniel Ginczek. The striker with the number 33 needs merely to touch the ball over the line. |
21st minute | The hosts equalise. Following some good play from Robert Lewandowski, Corentin Tolisso makes no mistake in slotting the ball over the line, to make it 1-1. |
32nd minute | The chance for the German champions to go in front. Robert Lewandowski‘s header is not well-placed and Ron-Robert Zieler manages to clear off the line. Shortly afterwards, Corentin Tolisso is also denied by Ron-Robert Zieler (35'). |
42nd minute | The hosts from Munich are in complete control of proceedings on the pitch, but the White-Red defence stands strong – and the visitors from Stuttgart are a constant threat on the break. Anastasios Donis wins possession in midfield, sprints forward and slams the ball home himself, to make it 2-1 to Stuttgart going into the break. |
52nd minute | Just as in the first-half, VfB get off to an ideal start. Rising to meet a cross from Emiliano Insua, Chadrac Akolo heads home to make it 3-1. |
55th minute | The intermittent score-line is short-lived – as the Cannstatt Boys immediately add another. A header from Erik Thommy is parried by Sven Ulreich, but Daniel Ginczek pounces to make it 4-1. |
90th minute | VfB hold out through to the end and earn themselves a highly-deserved victory away to the German champions. |
Christian Gentner:
Our team has unbelievable character. Beginning with our exceptional goalkeeper, every individual fought determinedly. I am simply delighted for the lads.
Summed-up
What an afternoon! What a finish to the season for VfB! With their 4-1 victory away to FC Bayern Munich, the Wasenelf crowned their excellent run of form in recent months and inflicted the first home defeat of the campaign on the German champions. An unbelievable end to the season.
