In the closing minutes of VfB’s home clash with TSG Hoffenheim, White-Red exuberance rippled around the Arena. In spite of the dismissal of Santiago Ascacibar, the Cannstatt Boys led 2-0 with just ten men – and the score-line would remain as referee Felix Zwayer eventually blew the final whistle. During the win in their final home game of the season, Christian Gentner & Co. convinced with an utterly committed performance – displaying commitment and efficiency in front of the opposition goal. The brace-scorer on the day was a man who had left the fans waiting to celebrate his first „home-goal“ in recent weeks. At the final whistle, the team went on a lap of honour to celebrate the victory together with the fans.
Personnel
Tayfun Korkut stuck with the starting eleven that secured the points last weekend against Leverkusen. There was however one alteration to the squad: On Saturday, Jens Grahl got the nod as reserve goalkeeper ahead of Alexander Meyer.
12th minute | In the opening phase, the action takes place in and around the VfB penalty-area. The visitors from Hoffenheim force the issue early on and create a number of decent openings. Benjamin Pavard was twice on hand to block efforts from Mark Uth (5'), before Andrej Kramaric fired just wide of the upright. In Santiago Ascacibar (2') and Timo Baumgartl (8'), two VfB players found themselves booked early in the match. |
25th minute | Having come through the early phases of the game unscathed, the Cannstatt Boys battled their way back into the tie and are once again ultimately effective in front of the opposition goal. A delivery from the right by Christian Gentner finds Mario Gomez takes control and slots home what is his first home goal of the season. The striker’s seventh goal in the latter half of the season makes it 1-0. |
45th minute | VfB’s opening goal has an effect on the match: Tayfun Korkut’s men hold their opponents a good distance from their goal throughout the remainder of the half and take their advantage in the break. |
60th minute | The team in the shirts with the infamous red hoop are in control of proceedings after the re-start, although chances at either end are a rarity. |
65th minute | In the 65th minute, VfB are reduced to ten men. Santiago Ascacibar sees a second yellow card and is duly dismissed. Shortly afterwards, substitute Adam Szalai has a chance for Hoffenheim, but drags his shot wide from an excellent position (66'). |
74th minute | The visitors press – VfB score! On the counter-attack, Mario Gomez slots home his second of the match. The rest is White-Red party-time. |
90th minute | "Oh wie ist das schön..." (How sweet it is…) rings around the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The White-Red fateful are simply enjoying every second. |
Ron-Robert Zieler: :
That was a very energetic performance today. We wanted to win our final home game in front of this crowd at all costs – and we did just that! The points are for the fans, but also for the whole team, as we really gave our all. We turned a little into a great deal today and defended extremely well – even with a man down. Three wins in succession – that’s a great feeling.
Summed-up
VfB could hardly have enjoyed a better home finish to the 2017/2018 season, launching the bulk of the 58,312 strong crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Arena into raucous celebration. As so often was the case in recent weeks, the Wasenelf presented themselves as determined, disciplined and effective.
