VfB return from Wolfsburg with a point in the bag. In their first game under new head-coach Tayfun Korkut, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop found themselves trailing at the break. In the second-half though, the Wasenelf were the more determined of the two sides and deservedly grabbed an equaliser, with Mario Gomez netting against his former club.
The low-down
The game in Lower-Saxony saw Tayfun Korkut on the VfB bench for the first time in the Bundesliga, having taken charge on Monday. The Cannstatt Boys began the second half of the campaign with a win over Hertha BSC (1-0), but lost their last two matches to Mainz (2-3) and Schalke (0-2) respectively. On 20 points, VfB went into the clash with VfL Wolfsburg in 14th place – one spot behind the hosts.
Personnel
Tayfun Korkut wasn’t the only VfB debutant on the day, with new-signing Erik Thommy making his first appearance in the short with the infamous red hoop – and that from the outset. The VfB coach made a total of five changes to the starting eleven from the defeat to Schalke, with Erik Thommy, Anastasios Donis, Santiago Ascacibar, Dennis Aogo and Andreas Beck replacing Berkay Özcan, Chadrac Akolo, Dzenis Burnic, Marcin Kaminski (all on the bench) and Jacob Bruun Larsen (not in the squad). Mario Gomez spearheaded the attack, and was bid an official farewell by his former employers before kick-off.
| 10th minute | VfB are the first to create an attempt on goal. A corner delivered by Erik Thommy is headed just wide by Mario Gomez at the near post. |
| 22nd minute | The hosts have the bulk of the possession, but are causing no real problems for the VfB defence at this stage. Wolfsburg‘s Maximilian Arnold tried his luck from distance but fails to hit the target. |
| 24th minute | VfL take the lead! The hosts win possession in midfield and attack at pace. Divock Origi drives towards the VfB goal and fires a powerful shot home, to make it 1-0. |
| 29th minute | The next opportunity for Wolfsburg: Daniel Didavi tests Ron-Robert Zieler with a bouncing shot from 20 meters out, which the keeper is equal to. |
| 46th minute | To begin the second period, Daniel Ginczek replaces Aanastasios Donis. The striker makes an almost immediate impact, taking on a long ball forward by Ron-Robert and forcing a save from VfL keeper Koen Casteels. |
| 60th minute | VfB are putting the pressure on and causing a particular threat from dead-ball situations. In the 58th minute, Benjamin Pavard goes close, but just two minutes later, the White-Red fateful are off their seats and celebrating the equaliser. From a corner, Dennis Aogo fires a shot towards the VfL goal, which Mario Gomez gets a toe to, to turn the ball into the net – 1-1. |
| 78th minute | The Wasenelf are the greater threat in the second period. A delivery fired across the box by Gomez is flicked well wide by Daniel Ginczek. |
| 90th minute | In the closing phase, neither side can edge a telling advantage and the game finishes with the spoils being shared. |
Mario Gomez:
We’d like to have taken all three points from this game. During the first-half, there was a lot of just testing the water. In the second-half, we showed just how we must approach the up-coming matches – no fear, no hiding – then we’ll pick up the point.
Summed-up
In the clash with their direct neighbours in the table, VfB deserved their point. Tayfun Korkut’s men dealt well with the first-half set-back and were the more active of the two sides after the break – albeit making effective use of just one of the chances that presented themselves.
