In the 13th minute, VfB were somewhat unjustifiably reduced to ten men, with Dzenis Burnic receiving a second booking. The Cannstatt Boys quickly dealt with the set-back of the red-card and soon after the opening goal for the hosts. Daniel Ginczek put the Wasenelf back on level-terms from the penalty-spot (55’), but in the end, Hamburg made the extra-man count and ran out 3-1 winners.
Personnel
Hannes Wolf was forced to make one change to his starting eleven from last weekend’s home win over SC Freiburg. With Santiago Ascacibar suspended for a fifth booking, the midfielder had to sit out the clash with HSV and was replaced by Dennis Aogo, who joined Dzenis Burnic in defensive midfield.
13th minute | Tough setback for VfB: Dzenis Burnic, who was booked for a foul after just four minutes, receives a second-booking and is duly dismissed. The situation leading to the second booking: In a challenge with Aaron Hunt, the VfB man made minimal contact with his opponent – a harsh decision from referee Guido Winkmann in brandishing a card. |
20th minute | The next setback for the Cannstatt Boys: From a less than powerfully drive free-kick by Aaron Hunt from 25 meters out, Ron-Robert Zieler allows the ball to slip through his fingers. The ball strikes the post, bounces against the keeper’s leg and roles over the line – VfB are 0-1 down. |
55th minute | VfB are a man down, but back on level-terms! Daniel Ginczek fires home powerfully from the penalty-spot to make it 1-1. The penalty resulted from a video-referee decision. The scene which led to the penalty: From a corner delivery by Dennis Aogo, the ball strikes the hand |
65th minute | HSV go back in front: Some good combination play in midfield sees the ball played out wide to Dennis Diekmeier, who delivery an inch-perfect cross for Filip Kostic powering in at the back post. The former VfB man gets to the ball ahead of Andreas Beck to make it 2-1. |
69th minute | Just four minutes on, the hosts from Hamburg make it 3-1! Jann-Fiete Arp forces his way past several VfB defenders in the area and fires a shot low into the far corner. |
Dennis Aogo:
We got into the game well and had a great chance to open the scoring. It’s unbelievably hard to get a second-booking and then sent off for such a foul. That changed the whole game. However, we scored an equaliser and wanted to then hold on to that for as long as possible – maybe even snatch a winner. The double-whammy from HSV ultimately decided the game.
Summed-up
VfB were to remain without a point once again at their sixth attempt away from home this season. The overly harsh red-card for Dzenis Burnic, which, including added-time, left VfB a man down for over 80 minutes, certainly had a significant role to play in the defeat. That, couple with individual errors and poor defending, led to three goals being conceded and the subsequent defeat. Ron-Robert Zieler made a horrendous error for the 0-1, but subsequently kept his side in the game with some excellent stops and ultimately prevented a heftier defeat.
