Post-match quotes

The VfB coach and players reflected on their poor start to the match, the significance of the quick reply at the start of the second half and the emotional nature of the late winner.

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We weren’t quick enough out of the blocks, and the team was feeling under pressure after the last two defeats. During the half-time break, we made a tactical change so that we could put more pressure on the opposition when they were on the ball and get more control of the midfield. At 2-0 down we had nothing to lose and wanted to give it everything we’d got to try to turn the game around. Fortunately that’s what we managed to do. We’re delighted with the win.”

Gonzalo Castro: “The dying minutes of the match were really exciting and it’s all the better in circumstances like those that we managed to get the win. After two defeats prior to that and the absolutely terrible first half this evening, this win is so important for our morale.”

Holger Badstuber: “We had to go into the second half with an ‘all or nothing’ mentality and that came off, even though it was a real risk that we were having to take. It came up trumps because Hamburg also sat back more. We’re happy that we’re proving ourselves back out on the pitch.”
