The win was exactly what VfB needed and took them back up to second spot in the league. Despite being two goals adrift at half-time, the boys from Cannstatt showed real character and team spirit to battle their way back into the match, with the late winner from Gonzalo Castro giving them all three points.
Personnel
Pellegrino Matarazzo had to cope with two suspensions for this game, namely Daniel Didavi (two bookable offences) and Atakan Karazor (fifth yellow card). The coach brought in Silas Wamangituka and Orel Mangala to replace them, while Hamadi Al Ghaddioui started up front instead of Mario Gomez.
16th minute | The visitors take the lead. A corner from Aaron Hunt is headed home by Joel Pohjanpalo to make it 1-0 for HSV. |
45th minute +2 | Time added on at the end of the first half proves fatal for VfB. Hamburg are awarded a penalty after a handball in the area, which Hunt dispatches to make it 2-0 to the visitors. |
47th minute | VfB halve the deficit right after the break. Pascal Stenzel sends a free-kick from the left-hand side into the danger zone and Wataru Endo leaps highest to nod home. |
60th minute | It’s VfB’s turn to get a penalty, which Nicolas Gonzalez converts. Referee Christian Dingert adjudges Orel Mangala to have been fouled in the box by HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes and points to the spot. |
77th minute | Sasa Kalajdzic comes on as a substitute for VfB, with the Austrian finally making his competitive debut for the club after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury. |
89th minute | So close! Another free-kick from Stenzel and this one, from a good 20 metres out, hits the post. |
90th minute +2 | VfB have time for one last attack. Gonzalez does the spadework and substitute Castro scores the winner to make it 3-2. The final whistle comes seconds later. |
Holger Badstuber:
We had to go into the second half with an ‘all or nothing’ mentality and that came off, even though it was a real risk that we were having to take. It came up trumps because Hamburg also sat back more. We’re happy that we’re proving ourselves back out on the pitch.
Summary
This was a real battling performance from VfB to get three points and go above Hamburg in the table. The first half was certainly a disappointment, but Matarazzo’s charges came out after the break all guns blazing and soon got back into the match. It could have gone either way after the equaliser, but at the end of the day it was VfB who converted the very last chance of the game to run out worthy winners at home and go back up to second.
