Tim Walter’s charges brought a point home from their trip to Darmstadt despite going behind midway through the first half, as Sosa’s maiden strike for the Cannstatt boys just before the half-time whistle ensured they went into the break on level terms. VfB then dominated the second period but were unable to convert their possession into goals.
Team news
Walter was happy to keep faith with the team that had taken all three points at home to Nürnberg the week before, with the only change being Silas Wamangituka starting ahead of Daniel Didavi.
20th minute | After little of note in the opening exchanges, Darmstadt suddenly take the lead from a seemingly harmless throw-in in the middle of the park. The ball ends up at the feet of Tobias Kempe, who prods it home from close range to make it 1-0. |
45th minute | Just as the referee is about to bring an end to the first half, Sosa notches his first goal for VfB. Wamangituka centres from the right-hand corner of the box and finds Gonzalo Castro completely unmarked. Darmstadt keeper Marcel Schuhen claws the header away but Sosa is in the right place at the right time to make the half-time score 1-1. |
55th minute | A huge opportunity goes begging for VfB. Sosa wins the ball back in the opposition penalty area and squares it for Mario Gomez, who fires over the bar. |
65th minute | The ball ends up in the back of the net following a counter-attack as Gomez is once again fed by Sosa, but the referee rules it out for offside. |
78th minute | How did that not go in?! Philipp Förster hits the post and then Santiago Ascacibar’s follow-up is hacked away by Darmstadt’s Immanuel Höhn. |
90th minute +5 | Referee Patrick Ittrich allows five minutes of added time but the score remains 1-1. |
Mario Gomez:
It’s so tough to have to be talking about another offside decision – that’s the sixth in three matches. I think tonight we were as good as we have been recently and we could have – probably should have – won the match with the chances we created.
Summary
Based on their second-half performance, VfB can feel aggrieved not to have taken all three points. Walter’s team were the dominating force after the break, with Gomez having a goal chalked off, Förster hitting the post and Darmstadt defending as if their lives depended on it to ensure that the match ended all square at 1-1.
