Team news
VfB head coach Tim Walter was forced to make one change from the team which won the home derby 3-0 over Karlsruher just a week earlier. Captain Marc Oliver Kempf was suspended, with Nathaniel Phillips moving into central defence alongside Holger Badstuber. Pascal Stenzel took over the captain’s armband.
1st minute | VfB get off to the worst possible start and find themselves a goal behind with less than a minute on the clock, Aziz Bouhaddouz opening the scoring for the hosts. |
10th minute | A lovely pass behind the defence from Philipp Förster tees up Gomez to fire home the equaliser into the right-hand corner, but the goal is not allowed to stand since the striker was a hair’s breadth offside. Referee Harm Osmers consults the video assistant and sticks by his original decision. |
24th minute | Besar Halimi swings over a corner and Bouhaddouz makes it 2-0 for the home team. |
45th+3 minute | Just before the break, Gomez again finds the back of the net, this time with an incredible overhead kick from close range. And once again the goal is chalked off due to a marginal offside decision. |
71st minute | Gomez must be starting to think that he is cursed… The experienced forward does everything right and prods the ball past SVS keeper yet again, but for the third time, it will not count as he was a yard offside in the build-up. |
89th minute | Handball! Penalty! Silas Wamangituka tucks it away into the bottom left-hand corner for VfB to make it 2-1! |
Head coach Tim Walter:
We need to hold our hands up regarding a few things that we didn’t do well today. In the opening 20 minutes we weren’t up to speed and fell behind to goals from set pieces. That’s all about focus and paying attention.
Summary
Despite dominating possession, creating countless chances and Gomez scoring three goals, none of which were allowed to stand, VfB fell to a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat away to Sandhausen, dropping further points in the all-important bid for promotion. When they finally reduced the deficit with Silas Wamangituka converting from the penalty spot in the 89th minute after a handball, it was too little, too late to get anything out of the match.
