One goal, three points

Under the guidance of caretaker coach Olaf Janßen, VfB earned a 1-0 victory away to 1. FC Kaiserslautern and thus took all three points for the second time away from home this season. Driven on by thousands of travelling fans, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop controlled much of the tie and presented themselves as decidedly improved, not least in their defensive actions. The only goal of the game was scored by Simon Terodde. In addition, there were two recently injured players back in the side, whilst a new signing made his starting eleven debut.

Personnel

There were two recently side-lined players back in VfB’s starting formation: Timo Baumgartl joined Toni Sunjic at the heart of the Stuttgart defence, whilst Hajime Hosogai began in central midfield, with Alexandru Maxim taking up the position on the left wing. Having been introduced as a substitute against Heidenheim last weekend, new man Takuma Asano was in the starting eleven for the first time, whilst Benjamin Pavard took a debut spot in the first team squad, initially joining his team mates on the substitute’s bench.

Highlights
5th minute The hosts begin impressively and create the first chance of the match, with Marlon Frey firing on goal from eleven meters out, but curling his effort wide of the far post.
20th minute VfB are taking ever more control. Taking on a pass from Alexander Maxim, Tobias Werner drives a low shot just wide of the target.
45th minute In the closing phase of the first half, neither side can find an effective way through in the opposition penalty area and the match duly goes into the break with the teams locked in stalemate. FCK made the better start, but with 20 minutes played, VfB took charge of proceedings.
46th minute To begin the second period, Kevin Großkreutz is introduced as a replacement for Tobias Werner.
52nd minute VfB take a well-deserved lead. Christian Gentner plays Emiliano Insua through on the left. The Argentine’s cross finds Simon Terodde in the centre and the striker heads home to make it 1-0.
90th minute + 2 It’s all over! VfB have taken a narrow, but nonetheless deserved three points. The Cannstatt Boys withheld some late pressure from the hosts and always looked a threat on the break themselves.

Simon Terodde:

Together with the fans, we gave our all as a team over the full ninety minutes and deserved the win. I am really happy to have scored. I’m just trying to perform as well as I possibly can and help the team. On Tuesday we are up against Braunschweig, who are an as yet undefeated promotion candidate. We are looking forward to the game, which will surely be an interesting one. We will be giving our all once again from the first minute to the last.

Summed-up

VfB certainly deserved the three points! With the Cannstatt Boys initially confronted by a determined host, after twenty minutes, Christian Gentner & Co. began to take charge of proceedings. During the course of the first half, Stuttgart forced FCK back into defensive mode, but were unable to breach the Kaiserslautern back-line before the break. In the second period, VfB continued to push and duly took a lead, which the 'Wasenelf' successfully defended over the distance. With the Saturday games completed, the win sees VfB initially move into fourth place in the table.
