A convincing evening

VfB beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-0 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena and take top spot in the table.

Simon Terodde rises to head the hosts into a 1-0 lead.
Simon Terodde rises to head the hosts into a 1-0 lead.

Determined, committed and dominant over long periods of the match: On Monday evening, VfB proved ultimately convincing against Fortuna Düsseldorf in their first home game of 2017. Right from the outset, the side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop pressed forward, creating their first chance on goal early on, before then taking the lead with thirteen minutes on the clock and adding a second soon after. The early phase from VfB was to lay the groundwork for a deserved win, which not only delighted the fans, but also saw the Cannstatt Boys go top of the table on match-day 19, a goal debut, the club’s 200th goal in the 2. Bundesliga and also a competitive debut for the home side.

Personnel

Hannes Wolf made two changes to his starting eleven from the clash with FC St. Pauli. The injured Matthias Zimmermann (torn ankle ligaments) was replaced by Anto Grgic in midfield, with winning goal-scorer from last weekend Carlos Mané getting the nod over Jean Zimmer on the right wing. In addition, the VfB added new signing Josip Brekalo to his 18-man squad and winter signing Julian Green started a home game in the VfB shirt for the first time. Further winter additions, Jérôme Onguéné (joined team training last Friday) and Ebenezer Ofori (African Cup of Nations participation until last Saturday), were not selected on this occasion.

Course of the game
4th minute An early opportunity for VfB to take the lead. From a free-kick on the right, Marcin Kaminski gets a header in on the opposition goal. The scene should set the ball rolling for a good first-half display by VfB…
13th minute …and the hosts open the scoring with thirteen minutes played. A cross from the left by Emiliano Insua finds Simon Terodde rising in the centre to make it 1-0.
20th minute Anto Grgic shows his eye for a pin-point diagonal pass, picking out the unmarked Julian Green. The American international meets the ball on the volley and fires unstoppably into the far corner, to mark up his first competitive goal in the VfB colours – at the same time, VfB Stuttgart’s 200th goal in their ‘2. Bundesliga’ history. 2-0!!!!!
45th minute The Cannstatt Boys are greeted with rapturous applause as they head into the half-time break. Christian Gentner & Co. Put on a remarkable display in the first-half and underlined their superiority with two very well taken goals.
60th minute Wonderful ball control from Simon Terodde in the opposition penalty area. The striker immediately gets a shot away, but narrowly sends his effort wide of the target. Shortly after, Hannes Wolf introduces Josip Brekalo, making his VfB debut in place of Julian Green.
90th minute In the closing minute, Düsseldorf’s Julian Schauerte tries his luck from distance, but the ball lands on top of the VfB goal instead of in it. The Wasenelf play out the two minutes of added-time without looking threatened and duly claim three very well deserved points and thus, top spot in the table.

Julian Green:

This game was a lot of fun. We played particularly well in the first-half and I’m delighted to have been able to help the team with my goal – that’s something I work hard every day to do.

Summed up

VfB made effective use of their good starting position on Monday evening. With closest neighbours in the table Braunschweig and Hannover both losing at the weekend, Christian Gentner & Co. did just what was required of them, in spite of a number of chances being left untaken, and generally convinced with a determined display over the entire ninety minutes. Top spot in the table on match-day 19 is wonderful initial status, but it will be up to the Cannstatt Boys to confirm their standing on Sunday against SV Sandhausen.
