Christian Gentner scored the opener.

Next success

Three wins in the first three games since the winter break – VfB haven’t made a better start to a calendar year since 2010. Six years on, the Cannstatt Boys, again match their tally of three from three. Following successes against Köln and Hamburg, VfB beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 (2-0) at the end of a turbulent ninety minutes, which included six goals, a glut of chances and two red cards.

Personnel

VfB trainer Jürgen Kramny began once again with the same eleven that started in the games against Cologne and Hamburg.

Highlights

1st minute: There are just 39 seconds on the clock as Frankfurt’s Szabolcs Huszti tests Przemyslaw Tyton with an effort from distance, but the VfB keeper is alert and parries the shot, to keep his side on level terms.

27th minute: VfB take the lead! Taking on a perfectly weighted pass from Lukas Rupp, Christian Gentner slots home to make it 1-0.

45th minute +1: Right on the stroke of half-time, VfB increase their advantage to 2-0. From a corner delivered by Filip Kostic, Georg Niedermeier rises at the back post to head square for Daniel Didavi, who acrobatically converts from close range. The referee then immediately blows the half-time whistle.

Statement

Christian Gentner: "The flow of play really swung back and forth. There were a couple of phases during which we should have been more convincing in our approach. We still have a lot of work to do. Right after the match, we are just happ."

Post-match comments

52nd minute: Eintracht Frankfurt pull it back to 2-1. Yanni Regäsel crosses from the right for Stefan Aigner, whose header is parried by Przemyslaw Tyton, but the loose ball falls kindly for Alexander Meier to force home from point blank range.

65th minute: The Cannstatt Boys withstand the flow of Eintracht attacks and duly restore their own two-goal cushion. Christian Gentner floats in a cross for Georg Niedermeier to power through and head VfB into a 3-1 lead.

67th minute: VfB are reduced to ten men. Daniel Didavi receives a second booking and is sent for an early shower.

75th minute: Red-card for Eintracht and a penalty for Stuttgart. Adriano Zambrano fells substitute Artem Kravets in the area. The Frankfurt defender sees his second yellow and is given his marching orders.

76th minute: Filip Kostic converts the penalty to make it 4-1.

89th minute: Frankfurt reduce the deficit to 2-4. Szabolcs Huszti converts from a Marco Fabian corner.

90th minute: And it’s all over. VfB win their third game of the year.

Summary

The Cannstatt Boys deserve the win. In the first half, VfB were more committed in front of goal. After the restart, Jürgen Kramny’s men were put to the test after Frankfurt pulled a goal back and then made it 3-1 as the hosts were pushing hardest. On the day, VfB made effective use of their openings, but also had the necessary fortune on their side on a number of occasions. The win sees VfB clamber further up the table and open a wider gap on the relegation places.
