Daniel Didavi scores twice!

Switch to win

In the final game of the year, a crowd of 47,000 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena saw VfB take all three points against VfL Wolfsburg. On the night, Jürgen Kramny’s men proved convincing, always looking stable in the defence and allowing very little through. Not even the intermittent setback of going behind could knock Christian Gentner & Co. out of their stride. Effective switching of play from defence to attack proved the route to success for the Cannstatt Boys to earn a 3-1 (2-1) win.

Personnel

VfB trainer Jürgen Kramny made two changes to his starting eleven, with the rejuvinated Daniel Didavi (following a muscular problem) and Florian Klein (having recovered from a blockage in the neck area), with Alexandru Maxim returning to the bench and Serey Dié missing out through injury.

Highlights

14th minute: The visitors hit on the break to take the lead. Breaking from a VfB corner, the ball is laid back to Maxi Arnold, who fires home from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 for the side from Lower Saxony.

22nd minute: Coach Jürgen Kramny’s side have a quick response. From twenty meters out, Daniel Didavi cuts inside his marker and fires an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net to equalise for VfB. The hosts had had the opportunity to level just minutes earlier, but Timo Werner drove his shot well over the crossbar.

Statement

Daniel Didavi: "I am really happy for the team and for the fans about finishing the first half of the season with a positive experience. That was very important, but it must continue that way in the future. The trend is headed in the right direction, but we need to perform consistently."

Post-match comments

31st minute: And VfB take the lead on the break! Possession won, the play quickly switched from defence to attack, a squared pass and it’s 2-1. Christian Gentner lays the ball out right to Timo Werner, who bursts down the flank at pace and fires a delivery across the face of the goal, finding Filip Kostic at the back post to slot home.

47th minute: What a start to the second half for VfB! A quick combination between Lukas Rupp, Christian Gentner and Florian Klein gets the ball out to Daniel Didavi, who slams his shot under the crossbar to complete his brace – 3-1.

90th minute:
The game is over. VfB hold out over the distance and earn themselves all three points with a committed display over the full ninety minutes.

Summary

Determination, commitment and passion were demanded by Jürgen Kramny from his team and that’s exactly what he got from his men on Saturday evening against VfL Wolfsburg. Coming out of a stable defence, the Cannstatt Boys got stuck into the challenges and thus often claimed possession. The resulting attacks were almost always dangerous and successful. Thus, the VfB players celebrate a win to end the year, whilst they also move into fifteenth place and saw just how they will need to perform if they are to enjoy a good second half to the season.
