No chance in Munich

VfB make the return trip from Munich with nothing to show for their efforts. The Cannstatt Boys slipped to a 0-4 defeat at the uncontested Bundesliga leaders. VfB went a goal down early on and conceded three more goals then before the half-time break. In the second period, Zorniger’s men did get the ball in the Bayern net – but the goal didn’t stand.

Personnel

For VfB, the fit again Filip Kostic came in to replace the injured Marin Harnik in the starting eleven. It was the only alteration made to the side that began last weekend.

Highlights

11th minute: Having impressively held FC Bayern at bay during the opening phase, the Cannstatt Boys then found themselves a goal behind on a counter attack. Douglas Costa provided the assist for Arjen Robben to open the scoring.

17th minute: From provider to goal-getter. Douglas Costa slammed home a pass from Thomas Müller to make it 2-0 for the home side.

37th minute: Przemyslaw Tyton was in the thick of the action, making a number of good stops, but the keeper was left to pluck the ball out of the back of his net for a third time as Robert Lewandowski made it 3-0 for the league leaders.

Statement

Christian Gentner: "Particularly the first goal against us should never have happened. That almost put an end to our intentions. After the 0-1, we never really got a grip on the game, making too many errors in the first half and allowing our opponents too much space."
Post-match comments

40th minute: Bayern make their intentions clear even before the half-time break. Having had several attempts to increase their lead, Thomas Müller stooped in to head home his side’s fourth.

47th minute: Almost a quick response for VfB after the re-start, but Timo Werner’s goal was unfortunately not allowed to stand. The refereeing team incorrectly awarded a free-kick for off-side.

90th minute: With the end approaching, the game slipped into a lull and in the end, the score-line remained 0-4 from the VfB viewpoint.

Summary

FC Bayern are currently in a league of their own and the all-time record championship title holders confirmed their status once again against VfB, particularly in the first half. The Cannstatt Boys began bravely, but any hopes of stealing something away from Munich were quickly dashed. Trainer Alexander Zorniger’s side, who held their own well after the break and kept things sealed up at the back, have no reason to grieve the defeat. After the international break, VfB play host to FC Augsburg at the Mercedes-Benz Arena and it will then be important to take the points against such opponents if they are to climb away from the nether regions oft he table.
