Defeat in Dortmund

The attitude of the VfB players in Dortmund was correct, unfortunately the result wasn’t so promising. For long periods of the game, trainer Jürgen Kramny’s side looked compact and were not knocked out of their stride by conceding an early goal, but rather found a route back into the game. In the second half though, the Cannstatt Boys never managed to create a threat for the opposition goal and the hosts proved ultimately effective with their chances, running out eventual 4-1 (2-1) winners.

The low-down

Following the parting of ways with Alexander Zorniger, coach Jürgen Kramny took charge of the Bundesliga team with the infamous red hoop on their shirts for the first time this season.

Personnel

Jürgen Kramny made four changes to the starting eleven from last weekend for the game in Dortmund. Przemyslaw Tyton had recovered from a stomach bug and was back between the posts, forcing Odisseas Vlachodimos back to the substitute’s bench. Georg Niedermeier made his first start of the season, whilst Lukas Rupp and Alexandru Maxim began in midfield.

Highlights

3rd minute: The Cannstatt Boys get off to the worst possible start. Dortmund’s play-maker Henrikh Mkhitaryan unleashes a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area, which Przemyslaw Tyton gets down well to save, but can only parry and Gonzalo Castro is perfectly positioned to head home the loose ball.

19th minute: The home side manage to carve out a gap in trainer Jürgen Kramny’s back-line and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cleverly chips the ball over the on-rushing keeper to make it 2-0 for BVB.

Jürgen Kramny: "In conceding the early goal, we didn’t get off to a good start, but after conceding the second goal, we showed a really good reaction and had a very good phase. Our intension to day was to play out from a compact order. I looked to lend the team some stability, but in the end, conceding four goals again is simply too much."

Post-match comments

39th minute: A fantastic chance for Timo Werner. The 19 year old breaks, beating Sokratis and keeper Roman Bürki, but the young striker’s shot is stopped on the line by Lukasz Piszczeck. The Cannstatt Boys have their tales up…

40th minute: …and are rewarded for their efforts by reducing the deficit to 1-2. A delivery across the face of the goal from Filip Kostic is met at the back post and converted by Daniel Didavi.

65th minute: The ball is in the back of the VfB net for the third time. A delivery from the left is unfortunately deflected into his own net by Georg Niedermeier – 3-1 for BVB.

90th minute: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on target in injury time to make the final score 4-1 in Borussia Dortmund’s favour.

Summary

Similarly to recent games, VfB again found themselves dealing with an early setback in Dortmund, but, particularly in the first half, the Cannstatt Boys continued to press forward in search of a way back into the match. The goal shortly before the break gave the VfB lads every reason to have renewed hope, which failed to materialise as goals after the re-start. Jürgen Kramny’s men never managed to really threaten the BVB goal and, following the unfortunate own-goal to make it 1-3, there was no way back for VfB.
