Filip Kostic in a duel during the game.

Points shared with Bremen

A half-time lead was not enough for VfB to secure what would have been their third home success of the season. Instead, a crowd of 46,000 saw coach Jürgen Kramny’s men play out a draw with SV Werder Bremen at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. VfB took the lead through Lukas Rupp, but the visitors levelled in the second period through Anthony Ujah.

Personnel

In comparison to the away game in Dortmund, Jürgen Kramny made two alterations to his starting eleven. Serey Dié returned from his suspension and Toni Sunjic recovered from a thigh injury to take places in the first team, with Alexandru Maxim and Georg Niedermeier taking places on the bench.

Highlights

11th minute: VfB are compact right from the outset and control the early phases of the match. As a result, trainer Jürgen Kramny’s men create the first chance of the game. A long ball forward finds Daniel Schwaab and the right full-back lets fly from a tight angle. Werder keeper Felix Wiedwald makes the save, but the move begins a positive phase for the Cannstatt Boys.

33rd minute:
VfB take the lead! Filip Kostic bursts through and pulls back a long ball from the by-line, picking out Lukas Rupp, who controls the ball well and fires into the top of the net to make it 1-0.

Statement

Jürgen Kramny: "We played quite well, particularly in the first half, and we deserved to take the lead. With the exception of one incident, we were in complete control of our opponents in the first half. The equaliser knocked us out of our pride somewhat. We came back again in the closing phase and, with a bit of luck, we could have got a second goal. We need to look ahead now and prepare together for the game in Mainz."

Post-match comments

45th minute: VfB’s opener remains the only goal of the first half and VfB take their deserved lead into the break. Trainer Jürgen Kramny have earned their advantage, whilst preventing the visitors from creating anything of real danger.

71st minute: And there it is! A shot from distance by Clemens Fritz is very fortunately deflected to Athony Ujah, who makes no mistake in firing home to level the scores.

90th minute: Following a turbulent closing phase with three minutes of added time, the game ends in a 1-1 draw.

Summary

The massive effort invested is not to result in the third home win of the season for VfB. The Cannstatt Boys were determined from the outset and it took until the second half before the guests from SV Werder Bremen managed to create a clear chance on goal. In the first half, VfB Stuttgart were clearly the stronger side and subsequently took a deserved lead, but after the restart, Werder’s equaliser was very unfortunate from the VfB viewpoint. In the closing phase, both teams had the opportunity to decide the match in their favour.
