Daniel Ginczek scored the 2-1.

Success in Kiel

It was a tough challenge for VfB on Saturday evening, as they undertook their first competitive outing of the 2015/2016 season. In the first round of the DFB-Cup, the Cannstatt Boys ran out eventually deserved 2-1 (1-1) winners over Holstein Kiel. Having gone behind in the first half, VfB hit back with an equaliser before the break thanks to a neatly taken Daniel Didavi lob.

In the second half, Christian Gentner & Co. took control against the feisty third division hosts and deservedly took the lead through Daniel Ginczek. A total of four VfB new signings made their competitive debuts on the night.

Personnel
VfB coach Alexander Zorniger had to make two changes to the eleven that began in last weekend’s dress rehearsal success. Serey Dié (muscle sinew tear) and Martin Harnik (influenza) were both forced out of the reckoning at short notice. The Ivory Coast international was replaced in the midfield by Carlos Gruezo, with Timo Werner filling in for Harnik up front.

Match highlights
37th minute: Kiel take the lead. With eight minutes to go to the break, Przemyslaw Tyton can do nothing to prevent his side from going behind. Rafael Czichos fires home from eleven meters out, at the left side of the box, with a shot which takes a slight deflection on the way into the bottom corner.

Alexander Zorniger: "We were faced by a very determined opponent here tonight. We are satisfied with the result and our progression to the second round of the cup. We can draw a lot of conclusions from this game."

60th minute: 2-1 for VfB! The Cannstatt Boys put the opposition defence under immense pressure. Timo Werner wins possession on the edge of the box and passes centrally to Daniel Ginczek, who drives his shot powerfully into the bottom corner, to put the visitors in front.

90th minute +3: Referee Guido Winkmann ends the match after three minutes of added time. VfB are deserved 2-1 winners.

Summary
Particularly due to what was a controlled performance in the second period, the Cannstatt Boys deserved their 2-1 win on the night and thus progress to the next round of the competition.
