Finally!

Prior to kick-off on match day 26, many VfB fans took part in a DKMS event and registered their DNA for the German Bone Marrow Donors Association. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans for their support here. The VfB fateful then switched their focus to the Bundesliga and were eventually rewarded for their commitment with a 3-1 (0-0) win for their side over – finally the Cannstatt Boys’ first victory of 2015!

VfB began against the club from Hessen with three changes to the eleven that began last weekend, with Timo Baumgartl, Adam Hlousek and Martin Harnik returning in place of Daniel Schwaab, Gotoku Sakai and Filip Kostic.

Entertaining start

Both sides began aggressively and in determined fashion. Fired on by two very vocal fan groups, the game developed into an entertaining affair from early on – although without either goalkeeper really being tested, as much of the, often static, play became confined to the centre of the park.

VfB’s best chance of the first half fell to the hosts, with Serey Dié attempting a lob, following a quick break on the half-hour mark. Just two minutes later, the visitors created a good opening, but with Alexander Meier’s headed effort failing to find the target, the sides went into the break locked at 0-0.

Huub Stevens: "We are happy to have taken the three points. For a long period, we were not in the game and it was clear to see just what pressure does to people. Frankfurt benefitted from that, but after we went behind, the lads showed some great moral and came back well. Compliments to the team for that. We’ve just taken three points though – no more than that."

VfB over-turn Eintracht lead

With the second period barely six minutes old, Frankfurt struck through Haris Seferovic to take a somewhat flattering 1-0 lead (51‘), but within a short space of time, the match was to be completely turned on its head: Daniel Ginczek struck with a brace within just minutes, claiming his first and second goals in the shirt with the red hoop, to put the Cannstatt Boys in the driving seat. For his first goal, the striker was perfectly placed to force a cross from Martin Harnik over the line with his hip (63’). The second saw Ginczek get on the end of a chipped pass from Alexandru Maxim (66’), to all but raise the roof on the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The VfB fans then became even louder in the 80th minute. Filip Kostic showed an electrifying turn of place, bursting away from his marker on the left wing. With a squared delivery, Kostic picked out Alexandru Maxim, who slotted home to make it 3-1. Sven Ulreich was then twice called upon to display his class, first saving from Haris Seferovic (83’) and then making an excellent reaction stop from Carlos Zambrano (84’). There was to be no further activity around the goals, and VfB finally claimed their first victory since the turn of the year!
