Defeat to the title holders

On the third match day of the Bundesliga season, VfB were eventually beaten 0-2 (0-1) away to FC Bayern Munich. On the day, the visitor’s defensive work was generally good, but lacked commitment in getting forward. Trainer Armin Veh made two changes to the side beaten by 1. FC Köln a fortnight ago, with Moritz Leitner replacing the ill Daniel Didavi and Timo Werner getting the nod ahead of Alexandru Maxim.

Sven Ulreich to the rescue

71,000 spectators in Munich saw an evenly matched game early on, with the hosts creating their first chance on goal in the 15th minute. German international Thomas Müller got a header in on Sven Ulreich’s goal, but the VfB keeper reacted brilliantly to prevent the hosts going in front. At the other end, Antonio Rüdiger got his head to a corner delivery, but was unable to test the Bayern keeper.

Mario Götze breaks the deadlock

Mario Götze had more luck with his effort. Following a Bayern free-kick, an attempted headed clearance only made it as far as the FCB attacker, who fired unstoppably past Ulreich to hand the hosts a 1-0 lead, which they took into the break.

Armin Veh: "We started quite well, shifted the positions cleverly and didn’t allow our opponents to create much." Post match comments

Ribery scores

At the re-start, Filip Kostic replaced VfB striker Ibisevic, but the intended change in fortune was to remain elusive. VfB looked defensively solid and made life difficult for the home side, but failed to cause any real threat going forward. In the 71st minute, Timo Werner had a chance to equalise on the attack, but failed to find the target. At the other end, VfB were lucky not to go further behind, when Xabi Alonso cracked a shot off the crossbar and Robert Lewandowski followed up by hitting the post.

Bayern winger Franck Ribery then pounced on an unnecessary loss of possession in the centre of the park to get forward and make it 2-0 for Bayern. As a result, VfB find themselves in 17th place in the table at the end of match day three.
