Martin Harnik scores twice.

Incredible!!!!!

This was a game worth watching a second time! On Saturday in Frankfurt, the hosts took the lead, then VfB were in front, then Thomas Schaaf’s men went ahead again, but in the end, it was Armin Veh’s side who were celebrating a stunning 5-4 (2-1) away win. Passion, determination, and commitment – it was all there. And at the end of a turbulent afternoon, VfB Stuttgart were the ones celebrating!

The loss of Vedad Ibisevic and Moritz Leitner meant that Armin Veh would have to make a couple of changes to his starting eleven from last weekend, with Timo Werner and Antonio Rüdiger beginning on the bench, whilst Gotoku Sakai, Filip Kostic, Alexandru Maxim and Sercan Sararer got the nod from the outset. On the day, Martin Harnik celebrated his 150th Bundesliga appearance.

Right from the off, VfB looked to get forward and had early chances to take the lead, but efforts from Alexandru Maxim and Christian Gentner failed to find the target. On twelve minutes, Filip Kostic had the next opportunity to put the visitors in front, but it was the home fans who were the first to celebrate on the day. With their first genuine attempt on goal, Frankfurt snatched the lead, with Alexander Madlung rising highest to make it 1-0 for Frankfurt (21’).

Martin Harnik: "It was an unbelievable game." Post match comments

VfB pressed determinedly in search of an equaliser, with Sercan Sararer and then Filip Kostic going close, but it was Martin Harnik who was to put the guests back on level terms in the 35th minute and then fire Armin Veh’s men in front just two minutes later. The former Frankfurt coach took his side into the half-time break leading by 2-1.

Eintracht bounce back

Both sides had created plenty of chances during the first period in front of a crowd of 50,000 in Frankfurt – and there was more of the same after the re-start. With just six minutes of the period played, the 4,000 travelling VfB fans were up and celebrating again, when Christian Gentner completed a clever one-two with Alexandru Maxim by slotting home to make it 3-1 (51’).

Despite going two goals down, Eintracht refused to throw in the towel and were rewarded for their courage when Alexander Meier netted with some amount of fortune to reduce the deficit (57’). The hosts had their tails up now and, just four minutes later, Stefan Aigner levelled the scores. VfB were clearly stunned by the equaliser and duly saw the points begin to slip away when Alexander Madlung got on the end of a free-kick delivery to make it 4-3 for the home side (65’).

The tension in the arena could have been cut with a knife, with both sides looking to stamp their authority on the proceedings. Bamba Anderson was lucky not to receive his marching orders for a second bookable offence (74’) and VfB had some luck on their side when Meier’s effort struck the post (77’), but the final ten minutes of the game were to make all the difference for Veh’s men.

With 81 minutes played, Timo Werner slammed a shot home to put VfB back on level terms and, the joy amongst the travelling fans was to reach melting point in the 84th minute, when captain Christian Gentner drove the ball into the top of the net from point-blank range to put VfB back in front once again. The hosts were reduced to ten men when Haris Seferovic saw red (86’) and Thorsten Kirschbaum had to be alert in injury time to prevent Eintracht from levelling again, but in the end VfB held out to take all three points in an unforgettable Saturday afternoon’s football.
