Spoils shared with Braunschweig

In the end, there was just one point for VfB Stuttgart. The hosts went a goal down against Eintracht Braunschweig but turned things around thanks to goals from Alexandru Maxim and Martin Harnik, only to let the full complement of points slip away with a late equaliser.

Thomas Schneider made one change to his starting eleven in comparison to the side that began against Eintracht Frankfurt, with Konstantin Rausch getting the nod ahead of Gotoku Sakai. Captain Christian Gentner, making his 150th Bundesliga appearance for VfB, led out the side to the roar of a capacity filled Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The fans in the Arena were behind their side right from the first blow of the whistle, roaring trainer Thomas Schneider’s men into attack. There was little action for both goalkeeper, until Sven Ulreich found himself fishing the ball out of the back of his net. Eintracht’s Jan Hochscheidt took possession following a poor attempt to clear and curled his shot home to put his side in front (24‘).

In spite of the setback, the VfB fans continued to fire on their team and didn’t have to wait long until they were back on level terms. On the half hour mark, Arthur Boka launched a ball towards the back post, where Martin Harnik rose to head back into the path of Alexandru Maxim, who forced the ball over the line from close range.

Within five minutes, the hosts were then in front. Maxim’s attempted delivery was deflected into the path of Harnik, who impressively controlled the ball and fired home on the turn to make it 2-1 and send the Home side in leading by 2-1 at the break.

Frustrating equaliser

The second half began actively. Firstly a foul from the Eintracht keeper on Harnik earned the hosts a penalty, but Christian Gentner’s spot-kick was impressively turned away by Daniel Davari in the Braunschweig goal. With just over an hour on the clock, the euphoric fans in the Mercedes-Benz Arena were off their feet and ready to celebrate, but Marc Pfitzner was on the Eintracht goal-line to clear the danger.

Quote for the game

Martin Harnik: "I am disappointed because we failed to give something back to the fateful fans here against a direct relegation opponent. The fans gave us really great support and we can understand them being disappointed. It’s important that the fans know their voice is being heard. I hope we all approach the Bremen game as a unit.“

VfB were in charge but the advantage was a narrow one and the visitors were not about to lie back and accept their fate. In the 76nd minute, Timo Perthel fired a free-kick just wide of Ulreich’s upright and a further three minute on, the VfB keeper was called upon to make a stunning save from a Benjamin Kessel header. Braunschweig threw all they had into attack and were eventually rewarded for their determined efforts, when Ermin Bicakcic got on the end of a corner delivery to make it 2-2.

The fans in the Mercedes-Benz-Arena continued to gave their all but, in the end, they were left waiting for their first win in 2014 as the home side were left with just a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Eintracht Braunschweig.
