Last minute defeat

As all too often was the case this season, VfB once again conceded a late goal and were thus again lest empty handed. In injury time, FC Bayern Munich struck through substitute Claudio Pizarro to make it 0-1. Three VfB players bid farewell to the club on the day.

Trainer Huub Stevens made four changes to his starting eleven from last weekend, with Arthur Boka, Konstantin Rausch, Alexandru Maxim and Vedad Ibisevic coming in from the outset at the expense of the injured Martin Harnik and Daniel Schwaab, whilst Daniel Didavi and Cacau began on the bench.

There were some 7,000 VfB fans amongst the 71,000 in the Allianz-Arena. The hosts made the better start and had an initial opening through Thomas Müller (1’). Arthur Boka tried his luck at the other end just four minutes later, but was equally unsuccessful. As the half wore on, the game became more evenly balanced. Ibrahima Traoré went close on the quarter hour mark, before Sven Ulreich was forced to make an exceptional save from Mario Mandzukic (24‘). Bayern had a number of chances resulting from set-pieces, but were unable to make anything count and the sides thus went in at the break locked in stalemate.

Quote for the game

Huub Stevens: "It was typical the way this game finished – typical of the whole season! I feel really sorry for the lads, they were very well organized throughout. We simply didn’t reward ourselves for the hard work and that’s extremely tough on the lads. That’s just something we’ve experienced too often this season."

Thanks Arthur! Thanks Cacau!

Shortly before the half time whistle, Stevens replaced Arthur Boka, who was in danger of receiving a second booking, and introduced Daniel Didavi. The VfB fans rose duly to their feet to thank the Ivory Coast international for all of his efforts during his eight years in the White-Red. Thank you Arthur and all the best!

In the second period, the champions pressed from early on but could find no way through a well drilled and determined VfB defence. It took until the hour mark before the hosts really threatened, but again Sven Ulreich was on hand with a lightening quick reaction to deny Arjen Robben (61’). Four minutes later, Cacau was introduced as a substitute, to make his final Bundesliga appearance in the VfB colours after an impressive eleven years in Cannstatt. Again the fans were off their feet for the beloved front man – Thanks for everything Cacau!

The fresh front man had VfB’s first shot on goal in the second half, but was unable to really threaten Manuel Neuer (72’).

All the best Ibo!

It was pretty clear that neither side had anything other than pride to play for, but there were some physical clashes at times during the second period. In the 86th minute, Sven Ulreich had to be on his guard again, making another exceptional reflex stop from Robben.

As all too often this season though, VfB were to fall foul to another very late goal. Almost simultaneous with the final whistle in the 2013/2014 season, the ball fell to Claudio Pizarro, who slammed home from the edge of the box to make it 1-0 for Bayern.

Not to be forgotten, there was also a worthy send-off for Ibrahima Traoré, who parts company with VfB having made his final appearance for VfB on Saturday in Munich. The Guinean international moves on to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Thanks Ibo and all the very best for your future!
