Alexandru Maxim scores against Braunschweig.

4-0 and sixth spot!

Convincing – especially after the break! The statement pretty much sums up the 4-0 win away to Eintracht Braunschweig. An improved performance after the break saw Alexandru Maxim, Ibrahima Traoré and Martin Harnik add to Vedad Ibisevic’s first half opener. The win puts VfB into sixth place in the table.

Vedad Ibisevic opens the flood-gates

VfB began the tie strongly, although the side at the bottom of the table made some brave attacks of their own. Marco Caligiuri was put through well in the 36th minute and quickly got a shot away, but Thorsten Kirschbaum made a lightening quick reaction save to deny the hosts. At the other end, VfB won a free-kick, which Alexandru Maxim swung into the area for Vedad Ibisevic to climb highest and head the visitors into a 1-0 lead (40’), which VfB would take into the break.

Alexandru Maxim, Ibrahima Traoré and Martin Harnik make it 4-0

After the break, Konstantin Rausch replaced Arthur Boka on the left wing. From early on, the focus was set on attack. Ibrahima Traoré drove into the Braunschweig box and fired a shot which proved too hot for Marjan Petkovic to handle and Alexandru Maxim reacted quickest to poke the loose ball home and double the VfB lead (50‘).

Ten minutes later, Ibrahima Traoré and Timo Werner played a one-two which opened up the Eintracht defence but the Guinean international was unsuccessful with his effort. In the 63rd and 65th minutes.

Vedad Ibisevic: "We are naturally satisfied." Post match comments

The side coached by Thomas Schneider, Alfons Higl and Tomislav Maric dominated the play and allowed very little through at the back. In the 72nd minute Vedad Ibisevic went close and two minutes later Martin Harnik replaced. Eintracht attempted to push forward, but Dominik Kumbela’s delivery was cleared by Schwaab. At the other end, Gentner played through for the very agile Ibrahima Traoré, who this time took his chance and slotted home to make it 3-0 (76’). The goal and the VfB win were deserved thanks to a clear improvement after the break.

The VfB success was to become even clearer when Konstantin Rausch picked out Ibrahima Traoré, who in turn squared for Martin Harnik to slide in and make it 4-0 (86’). Cacau came on late in place of Alexandru Maxim, but there was to be no further action and the win was secured. The win sees VfB Stuttgart move into sixth place in the table.
