Vedad Ibisevic scores against Schalke.

Ibisevic brace sinks Schalke

Vedad Ibisevic increased his tally of goals against FC Schalke 04 to five for the season on Saturday – following his hat-trick against the ‘Königsblauen’ in the 3-1 win in Stuttgart, the Bosnian was on target again with a brace at the Veltins-Arena, as VfB secured a 2-1 away win.

Trainer Bruno Labbadia made four changes to his starting eleven from last weekend, with Tim Hoogland and Serdar Tasci replacing the suspended Gotoku Sakai and Antonio Rüdiger respectively, whilst Georg Niedermeier and Vedad Ibisevic were also available again and returned to the starting formation.

The crowd of 61,673 in the Veltins-Arena, including 4,100 VfB fans, was treated to a pacy tie from the start. There were a total of four attempts on goal within the first five minutes – two at each end. With 19 minutes on the clock, Alexandru Maxim tried his luck with a drive from 35 meters out, which only narrowly missed the target. Just five minutes later though, the visitors from Stuttgart were in front. Hitting on the break, a pass forward from Niedermeier found Vedad Ibisevic, who tucked his shot away to make it 1-0 for VfB.

Schalke had their best chance of the half in the 38th minute but Sven Ulreich was equal to the effort from Jermaine Jones and a determined and impressive first half performance saw Bruno Labbadia’s men take their well earned lead into the break.

S04 put the pressure on, VfB increase their lead

After the re-start, Schalke increased the pressure in search of an equaliser, but the VfB defence was on form and convincingly held the home side at bay. With just over an hour played, the visitors then had some fortune on their side, when a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar free-kick struck the post and Alexandru Maxim had to go full stretch to block the follow-up from Jones (63’). Three minutes further on, Molinaro picked out the run of Christian Gentner, who controlled the ball laid square for Vedad Ibisevic and the striker slotted home coolly to make it 2-0. It was the front man’s 15th goal of the season – his fifth against Schalke!

Bruno Labbadia: "We are of course delighted about this deserved win." Post match comments

With little over ten minutes to go, the hosts pushed again and went close through Joel Matip, whose header narrowly missed the target. Huntelaar then brought another good save from Ulreich. The Dutch striker was involved again in injury time, as the hosts scraped a goal back. Huntelaar brought in a delivery from the right, which took a wicked deflection off Niedermeier and eluded Ulreich to make it 2-1. VfB held out to the end though and secured all three points with a 2-1 win away to Champions League qualifying hopefuls FC Schalke 04.
