Tamas Hajnal score against St. Pauli.

In the second round of the DFB-Cup, VfB put themselves on the road to progression with a double whammy and increased their lead to 3-0 before the break as they rose to the role as favourites. The VfB goals were scored by Ibrahima Traoré, Vedad Ibisevic and Tamas Hajnal.

It took a few minutes of cautious testing of the water from both sides before there was any real action. Early on, FC St. Pauli made a few tentative attempts at getting forward but quickly turned their thoughts to shoring up at the back and preventing VfB from finding a way through.

Double-whammy for VfB

The first real chance on goal resulted from a Tamas Hajnal corner, which Antonio Rüdiger rose to meet and head on goal but FC keeper Philipp Tschauner went full stretch to deny the youngster (13’). As the half progressed, VfB took ever more control of the tie.

Not long after, Ibrahima Traoré was reeling away in celebration towards the substitute’s bench. The Guinean international had taken possession some 30 meters out and fired a shot goal-wards which eluded the keeper and found the top of the net – 1-0 (21’).

The VfB fateful had hardly even finished celebrating the opener before the ball was nestling in the back of the Pauli net for a second time. Just 70 seconds after the opener, Cristian Molinaro swung in a cross to the centre, which Okazaki nodded on towards the back post, where Vedad Ibisevic trapped the ball on his chest before hammering his shot inside the far post – 2-0!

VfB head-coach Bruno Labbadia: “We wanted to progress through to the last 16 at all costs and we’ve managed that. Post match comments

Tamas Hajnal seals the deal

The game then lost its tempo somewhat until the 41st minute, when Christian Gentner was played through on the left wing. The midfielder took a quick glance up and spotted Tamas Hajnal sprinting towards the back post. Gentner’s inch perfect cross found the Hungarian international unmarked to volley home and give VfB a 3-0 lead to take into the break.

With VfB having dominated the first period, Christian Gentner and Serdar Tasci were removed at half time to give Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Maza a run in the second 45 minutes, during which VfB comfortably defended their clear advantage.

Towards the finish, the game lost its way to a great extent. FC St. Pauli never looked like being in any position to create a threat to the home side, who were happy to play out the 3-0 (3-0) and secure their place in the second round of the competition.
