Energetic VfB crush Köln

After a goal-less first half, VfB upped the tempo in the second period of their away game to 1. FC Köln at the capacity filled RheinEnergieStadion and within the space of just twelve minutes took a three goal advantage, with Christian Träsch, Martin Harnik and Zdravko Kuzmanovic getting on the score-sheet. FC managed to reduce the deficit to 1-3 but could do nothing to prevent VfB from stealing away the points.

An open game

It took until the 22nd minutes before the first real effort was made on goal. From a Lukas Podolski free-kick, the ball fell to Milivoje Novakovic, who was unable to make a clean contact and sliced his shot wide of the mark. In the 34th minute, Lukas Podolski tried his luck with a chipped effort but Sen Ulreich was alert to the danger. Shortly before the half-time break, Tamas Hajnal tried his luck with a directly hit free-kick from 23 meters out, which Rensing turned away for a corner. With nothing more happening before the break, the sides went in with the scores locked at 0-0.

VfB step it up

The second half began with a chance for VfB. Hajnal swung a cross into the box and found Okazaki, who headed goal-wards. Rensing reacted quickly, sticking a foot out instinctively to prevent the visitors from taking the lead. The keeper could do nothing in the 51st minute though when Christian Träsch intercepted a poor Chihi pass in midfield and drove forward alone before hammering the ball into the top of the net from 22 meters out. The lead boosted the VfB confidence and saw FC become very instable. Stuttgart saw their chance and made excellent use of it. Just two minutes after taking the lead, Hajnal put in a cross from the left, which was nodded on by Serdar Tasci for Martin Harnik who came bursting through at the back post to toe-poke the ball home – 2-0.

VfB head-coach Bruno Labbadia: "That was an unbelievably important win."

With just over an hour played, VfB were then awarded a penalty when a shot from Boulahrouz struck the arm of Geromel. Kuzmanovic took on the responsibility from the spot and sent Rensing the wrong way to give his side a three goal cushion. In the 69th minute, Novakovic reduced the deficit but there was to be no way back into the game for the home side. It was a deserved 3-1 win for VfB Stuttgart and three very important points in the battle to avoid relegation.
