Safe!

Finally!! VfB were 2-1 winners over Hannover 96 on Saturday afternoon and secured the points needed to ensure there will be top flight football in Stuttgart next season. After a goal-less first half, Tamas Hajnal and Shinji Okazaki put the home side into a 2-0 lead. Lars Stindl got a goal back for the visitors but the points were to remain in Stuttgart.

There were no changes made to the eleven that began in the 2-1 win in Sinsheim last weekend as Labbadia’s men took on fourth placed Hannover 96. The game got off to a lively start, with Tamas Hajnal going close after just eight minutes. Hannover’s best chance of the first half fell to Sergio Pinto, after a quarter hour. The midfielder let fly, following a lay-off from Didier Ya Konan, but his effort whizzed just over the VfB crossbar. The remainder of the half proved uneventful and the sides went in at the break with the scores still at 0-0.

Hajnal and Okazaki on target

Hannover 96 made the first move forward in the second 45 minutes through Konstantin Rausch, who drove a powerful left-footed shot over Sven Ulreich’s bar. But then VfB took charge! Martin Harnik burst forward in the 58th minute an d passed to Tamas Hajnal, who placed a low shot from 20 meters out past the H96 keeper to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later, the VfB fateful were celebrating again. Cacau picked out Shinji Okazaki,  who was completely alone on the left, and the Japanese international slotted home from 18 meters out to make it 2-0.

Hannover then hit back with a quick answer. In the 66th minute, Jan Schlaudraff sent through Lars Stindl, who won the race to the ball with Georg Niedermeier, and the midfielder grabbed a goal back for the guests. Soon after, Khalid Boulahrouz could have restored VfB’s two goal lead as he took on a pass from Hajnal, but the Dutch international pulled his shot wide of the mark. Hannover went in search of an equaliser and came close through a Pinto free-kick. In the closing minutes, substitute Matthieu Delpierre tested his own keeper with a header and then Ya Konan went close with a header of his own, but there was to be no leveler for H96. As referee Felix Zwayer blew the whistle on VfB’s 2-1 win, tip flight football for next season was guaranteed!

A very special thank you to all of the VfB fans, who have given the team such phenomenal support throughout a difficult season.
