Successful trip all round

The U19s are back from Sao Paulo following a nine-day trip to Brazil in which they got to know the country, its people, and a different football culture.

When the U19s returned home after nine days in Sao Paulo, they brought back with them countless memories, new friendships, valuable sporting experiences and even a silver trophy. Their visit to partner club Sao Paulo FC was a successful one in many respects.

“We come away with a lot of positives,” said Daniel Teufel, VfB youth academy’s head of sport. “It was a very enjoyable stay. It’s fascinating to see how football connects people across cultures who don’t speak the same language. Our boys spent a lot of time with the players from Sao Paulo, which will certainly be beneficial for their personal development.”

From a footballing perspective, the trip, which included four matches against three different local opponents, served up valuable lessons. Tobias Rathgeb’s team lost 2-1 against hosts Sao Paulo at the start of the tournament, but beat Clube Vital 3-1 two days later.

In the third game, VfB faced national U20 league leaders SE Palmeiras, who had won both of their previous tournament matches. VfB put in an outstanding performance in the first half, dominating a physical opponent and taking a 4-0 lead into the break. After a thrilling second period, they emerged 4-3 victors to clinch a place in the final.

Final reunion

That set up a rematch with Palmeiras, whose players were at least one, if not two or three years older than their VfB counterparts, and who unsurprisingly ran out 4-1 winners.

“The matches against the Brazilian teams were very challenging because the football there is very physical and tough,” said Teufel. “But we held our own really well. That’s good for our players’ development.”

Great memories

There were many memorable moments off the pitch too, from attending the derby between São Paulo and Corinthians to exploring the football museum and visiting the Instituto Sementinha, a social project founded by Cacau that gives young people living in poverty access to education.

Furthermore, officials from both clubs held in-depth discussions on scouting and nutrition. “We maintained a close dialogue,” Teufel added. “It was interesting to see where the differences in player development lie.”

After a trip like this, it only remains for VfB to thank Sao Paulo FC for their hospitality, and for the warmth and friendliness of their welcome.
