VfB helping out at Vesperkirche in 2026

Every year during the winter months, the Vesperkirche Stuttgart offers those in need a warm meal and a sympathetic ear. As ever, VfB Stuttgart have been lending a helping hand.

An integral part of the city’s social fabric for over three decades, the Vesperkirche project symbolises solidarity, community and tangible aid – right in the heart of Stuttgart. People in need can not only get their hands on warm food but are also offered medical care, peace and quiet, and a sympathetic ear. For those for whom a hot meal isn’t a given, the Vesperkirche is a place of community.

Stuttgart’s Leonhardskirche opens its doors every day from mid-January to early March, serving around 700 hot meals a day and becoming a key focal point for those who are struggling in life. The project, which this year runs until 10 March, is funded by donations and relies on the outstanding efforts of countless volunteers, who transform the Leonhardskirche into a place where help, community and humanity take centre stage.

The project is now in its 32nd year and VfB Stuttgart have once again been lending a helping hand, thereby sending out a clear statement of social responsibility and solidarity. Representatives of the first team, board, executive committee and club staff as well as employees of main sponsor LBBW helped the Vesperkirche team dish out hot meals at the Leonardskirche on Wednesday 4 March. Currywurst and chips – a German favourite – were on the menu.

For VfB Stuttgart, volunteering at the Vesperkirche is not just another date in the calendar – it is an expression of self-image that stretches far beyond sport. Every year, the people they meet underline the importance of humanity, respect and solidarity for a functioning society.

CEO Alexander Wehrle was keen to highlight the importance of VfB’s annual commitment. “This is our 11th time at the Vesperkirche, so it’s already a long-standing tradition,” he said. “We as VfB have a social responsibility and it’s important that we reach out to people, particularly those who are currently, or permanently, struggling. Today, we want to make them feel that they’re not alone. Every one of us at VfB is here with full dedication.”

The VfB Foundation presented a cheque for €50,000 to the Stuttgart Vesperkirche as part of this year’s campaign. The donation once again serves to underline the Foundation’s deep social commitment to the region.
