“A thoroughly successful training camp”

Sebastian Hoeneß reflects on VfB’s pre-season camp in Grassau and looks ahead to the upcoming friendly against Everton.

The VfB squad returned to Stuttgart on Friday after five days at their pre-season training camp in Grassau. The Cannstatt boys already have a big game to look forward to, with Everton FC visiting the MHP Arena in VfB’s official season opener on Saturday 8 August (kick-off 17:00 CEST). Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has shared his thoughts on the training camp and the upcoming friendly against the Toffees.

Hoeneß on …

… pre-season preparations: “It was a thoroughly successful training camp. We’re returning to Stuttgart in a positive frame of mind. Conditions were good and the lads really pulled their weight. Overall, we’ve taken another step in the right direction.”

… varying fitness levels due to players’ staggered return dates: “That’s a normal part of pre-season. Because of the World Cup, some of the lads had a slightly longer break. On the whole, all the players look fit, refreshed and highly motivated. There’s a healthy level of competition. The fact is that we only have two more weeks until our first competitive game. It’s a real pleasure to work with the squad.”

… what he expects against Everton: “We want to show that we’ve taken another step in the right direction, but we also know we’ve only just returned from a very tough training camp. Everton will be physical opponents. We want to put a lot of things we’ve been working on recently into practice on the pitch. We’re looking forward to the whole experience – the season opening and all the fans.”

… Leo Sauer’s fitness levels: “We’re pleased he was able to join us at the training camp and get to know his team-mates. He’s working on his fitness and taking one step at a time.”
