Match summary
Sebastian Hoeneß made two changes to his starting line-up from the DFB Cup tie at Hansa Rostock, with Josha Vagnoman and Ramon Hendriks replacing the injured Nicolas Nartey and Chris Führich.
Tomas misses early chance
In a fast-paced contest at the Allianz Arena, Stuttgart started aggressively and had the better of the early stages. After just four minutes, Tiago Tomas missed a great chance to give VfB the lead when he hit the ball against the top of the crossbar from just four metres out.
Bayern convert corner
At the other end, Bayern also hit the woodwork from Michael Olise’s free kick in the 17th minute. But four minutes later, they did open the scoring from a set piece, Dayot Upamecano flicking a corner into the far corner.
Bredlow keeps VfB in it
Bayern’s dominance increased after that but Fabian Bredlow prevented further goals before half-time with good saves from Luis Diaz (26’), Nathaniel Brown (37’) and Konrad Laimer (42’), keeping the score 1-0 at the break.
Vagnoman equalises – Bayern respond
Vagnoman levelled in the 52nd minute with a strike from 11 metres out, but Bayern responded immediately. Olise and an own goal from Vagnoman in the space of two minutes made it 3-1 to the reigning champions, before late goals from Aleksandar Pavlovic and Diaz rounded off a deserved victory for the hosts.
Goals
21st minute – 1-0: From a Joshua Kimmich corner, Upamecano heads the ball into the far corner from close range.
52nd minute – 1-1: Manuel Neuer initially saves well against Jeff Chabot but can do nothing about the follow-up from Vagnoman.
55th minute – 2-1: Kimmich plays the ball into Olise in space in the penalty area, and he slots it past Bredlow to make it 2-1.
57th minute – 3-1: Vagnoman slips in the penalty box as a free kick comes in and inadvertently diverts the ball into his own net.
82nd minute – 4-1: After a counter-attack, Ismael Saibari gets the better of Finn Jeltsch in the box and then squares the ball to Pavlovic, who nets from close range.
90th minute +2 – 5-1: Bayern capitalise on a loose pass in midfield and Diaz finishes off another counter to make it 5-1.
Reaction
Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “Unfortunately for us, we only managed to reap the rewards from our good passages of play and convert them into goals on one occasion. As the match went on, Bayern got into more of a rhythm. In the second half, we made it 1-1 and we thought that it was game on again, and suddenly six minutes later, it was all over. That’s tough, it really is. I must congratulate my team, though, on the courage that they showed. It’s the start of the season, and what we need to aim for now is to improve, week by week.”
Goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow: “At the end of the day, this defeat really stings. We stuck to the plan that we had for Bayern, and for a long time, it worked. Unfortunately though, we shipped too many goals too quickly after we got the equaliser. Bayern were also absolutely ruthless during this period and taught us a lesson or two. What we need to do now is analyse our mistakes and make sure we do things better next Friday against Köln and pick up our first points.”
