Tiago Tomas returns to VfB

The attacker is back for a second spell in Stuttgart, joining with immediate effect from VfL Wolfsburg.

VfB Stuttgart have made their fifth summer signing ahead of the 2025/26 season by recruiting Tiago Tomas from VfL Wolfsburg. It will be the Portuguese attacker’s second stint in Cannstatt, having previously been at the club on loan between February 2022 and May 2023.

The 23-year-old will train with his new team-mates for the first time on Sunday, having signed a contract valid until 30 June 2029. He will wear the number eight jersey for Sebastian Hoeneß’s side.

After successfully undergoing a medical check on Saturday, Tomas said: “I’m really happy to able to play for VfB again. I’m delighted that the transfer worked out and I’m looking forward to being part of the whole team. The club has developed greatly since my first time here. I want to contribute with my performances so that we can achieve our new objectives and be successful together.”

Sporting director Christian Gentner said: “Tiago has a lot of qualities. He’s quick, a good dribbler and has superb technique. Not only do his abilities mean he is very well suited to our style of play, but he will also make our attacks much more varied and therefore more effective. On top of that, he is a positive and open person who will integrate into our group without needing any time to settle in.”

Portuguese league winner

Tomas was born on 16 June 2002 in the Portuguese town of Cascais. He cut his teeth in the game at Carcavelos and Estoril-Praia before joining the Sporting Lisbon youth academy in 2014.

He progressed through every youth level and made his senior debut for the club in the Portuguese top flight on 1 July 2020. Tomás subsequently made 65 more competitive appearances for Sporting, contributing nine goals and four assists, as well as helping the side win the Portuguese league title in 2020/21.

Tomas moved to VfB for 18 months in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, registering eight goals and four assists in 47 outings during that period. He returned to Sporting at the end of his loan in summer 2023 but moved to VfL Wolfsburg shortly after that.

The 1.80-metre attacker has represented Portugal 45 times at youth level from the U17s upwards, scoring 12 times and providing five assists. He helped his country finish as runners-up at the U21 European Championship in 2021.
