There was a full house in Bad Cannstatt at the start of the Easter holidays as VfB fans flocked to the club centre for the start of training ahead of the Bundesliga home match against Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 18:30 CEST). Even after the arduous session, Tiago Tomás and his colleagues still had plenty to do. “Signing the autographs took almost as long as the session itself (laughs),” said the forward. “But it pleases the fans – especially the children – and also us to see how excited and happy they are.”
For Tomás and his colleagues, Tuesday morning’s session was the first warm-up after a few days of rest. The Portuguese welcomed the longer break: “That’s not so common for us, but the team have had a lot of games in a short period. We needed to relax a bit and get into the right shape to end this season and prepare for the game on Saturday, which is very important for us.”
The Cannstatt boys can cut the gap to second-placed BVB to two points with a win and gain a confidence boost for the final stretch of the campaign. “We’re in a very good position and want to keep it that way,” added the 23-year-old. “If you want to be up there, you have to prove yourself against the best teams. I think we’ve shown this season that every time we play against a good team, we can win. We now want to do that in our stadium and keep the three points here.”
