“We’re not putting any limits on ourselves”

Jamie Leweling wants to continue developing and is going through a maturing process, as he explains in this interview.

With a sponsor engagement at the airport, an interview and a few photo and autograph requests after training, Jamie Leweling is a man in demand these days. This stems from how he has come on as a player of late. Having moved to VfB in summer 2023, he became a German international in autumn 2024, won the DFB Cup with VfB in May 2025 and is currently just one goal involvement away from his personal best Bundesliga season. The winger wants to continue developing and is going through a maturing process, as he explains in this interview.

Hello Jamie! For our interview appointment, you took a look at the VfB aircraft designed by Premium Partner SunExpress. How does it feel to be travelling through Europe on it?

Jamie: “It’s certainly something special. We want to make sure we can go on one or two more European journeys on the ‘VfBExpress’ with our performances.”

You’ve reached the next round of the UEFA Europa League. Based on what you said in May 2025 at Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz (“We can win the European cup”), that should just be an intermediate stage…

Jamie: “That statement is going to follow me for a while (laughs). But that’s completely fine, I stand by it. In that moment, I was expressing a big dream, that’s worth working hard for and which also requires a fair amount of luck. In general, the team love being involved in European competition and seeing how far we can go when we give it our all.”

What are the reasons for the current form in your view?

Jamie: “Every player is doing his job. Standards are high in training, we’re pushing each other to the next level. We know we can only achieve our goals as a team. We’re focused, and we also have a bit of fun now and then.”

Jamie Leweling:

I put in extra shifts during the summer and winter breaks. I’ve also matured and want to take more responsibility for the team and for myself.

You’ve had success working on your shooting, if we think back to your goals in the 4-0 win at Bremen and the 3-0 win at Mönchengladbach. What exactly have you refined?

Jamie: “For me it was about improving my finishing – from distance, after one touch at high speed, sometimes under pressure from opponents, other times not. I put in extra shifts during the summer and winter breaks. I’ve also matured and want to take more responsibility for the team and for myself.”

How do you judge VfB’s league performances thus far?

Jamie: “As in the other two competitions, we’ve got ourselves into a good position and have started the new year pretty well. We want to maintain this rhythm. We’re not putting any limits on ourselves.”

On Sunday, SC Freiburg visit the MHP Arena. What kind of match are you expecting?

Jamie: “It’s going to be a difficult and hard-fought game. The memories of the reverse fixture are still fresh: we lost 3-1 there despite being 1-0 up. We obviously want to put that right and celebrate with our fans at the end.”

The World Cup is taking place this summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico. How much of an ambition of yours is it to be in the Germany World Cup squad?

Jamie: “It would mean so much to me to be able to play in a World Cup, but that only happens if you put in the performances and the hard work. The more successful we are as a team this season, the better my individual chances are of getting a World Cup place.”
