Summon the energy again

On the back of the victory over Feyenoord, VfB are looking to continue their excellent home form in the Bundesliga on Sunday and successfully round off the current block of fixtures.

Following the 2-0 win in the UEFA Europa League, VfB are back in Bundesliga action against FC Augsburg on Sunday 9 November. Kick-off at the MHP Arena is at 17:30 CET.

Hoeneß: ‘Extend home run’

“We want to extend our home run in the Bundesliga and go into the international break with a strong performance,” declared head coach Sebastian Hoeneß. VfB have won all four of their home league matches this season. The meeting with Augsburg will be the team’s seventh game in 23 days. “The last few weeks have been suitably intensive,” said the 43-year-old. And they’ve also been largely successful, with progression to the DFB Cup round of 16 and the recent success in the Europa League. Hoeneß wants his side to maintain that form, saying: “We want to summon everything that makes us strong again versus Augsburg.”

And what about the opponents? A glance at the stats suggests that Augsburg have made a mediocre start to the 2025/26 campaign: 14th place in the table, seven points from nine matches plus the most goals conceded in the league. Yet in their performances, FCA have regularly caused problems for their opponents – which is why Hoeneß sees it differently: “Augsburg may have had a difficult phase in terms of results, but they recently put up a real fight against Borussia Dortmund [0-1] and will also ask questions of us.”

Jaquez ruled out

On the personnel front, VfB have one less option available for Sunday. Luca Jaquez pulled out of Thursday evening’s Europa League match during the warm-up with an adductor problem and has been ruled out for Sunday following a scan. In addition, Ermedin Demirovic (foot) and Justin Diehl (ankle) remain sidelined.
